Ive been seeing an interesting looking weapon on some mtg card art that I havent had any luck finding info on. Does anybody know what this thing is called and if it was ever used historically or inspired by something that was? Its the fan bladed polearm used by these guys. Ive seen some pictures of satyrs using shorter ones too and Im quite intrigued.

it's called an axe sword. or 'huruk-hai sword. At least I think that's what it's called.? In the lord of the rings, most orcs use them... except the 'hook' is on one end not both like in that image.
I know of medieval european 2-handed swords that implemented that shape into the sword to help in defense against shorter swords, except They were curved the other way :p Please somone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was a french design. (the two-handed sword version)

:D

I did some googling (used my l33t googling skills ), looked at the Wikipedia article for polearms and saw a similar weapon on a photo of Chinese polearms. That made me look up Chinese melee weapons, so I found the Monk's Spade. Is that it? It comes close I'd say.

It is called a skidinky-dink and is was first used by Colonel Jon Lappin in the Battle of The Fallen Canary during Third War of the Mexo-Diogas Accord .
Unfortunately for the Colonel, it did him no good , as he was brutally slain in hand to hand combat by the great Auzkion champion Bernfi Kuuntstone .

Poor Colonel Jon Lappin, the Custer of the Third Mexo-Diogas Accord wars. Especially after all the good he did in the second war.

Ahhh.... I see we have a student of history here hey .
But you're right , his heroics are the stuff of legend ....... First through the breach when the armies of Hoom broke the siege of Greebling....... Led a force of Beskliun Mercanaries and rescued Flan The Hungry from the clutches of Ian Brown the notorious Diogan torture junkie .....
Defeated not 1 , not 2 , not 3 but 4 of Ankerson quintuplets across the course of the war ( leaving only Deter Ankerson ).....
Tamed a wild Chang Snail to use as a mount and so on .
Bernfi Kuuntstone kicked his arse though.

Deter Ankerson assassinated the Highpreist of Gorm for which he was sentenced to be punched to death by a raging Straag .
He endured 3 mighty punches before his brain exploded on the 4th .
His body was then raped and eaten as is customary in Gorm .
