I'm very much in the NO camp, but over the Christmas period I was talking to my 16 year old nephew about the games. He loves Zelda games, particularly Breath of the Wild and Majora's Mask, but he was saying that Ocarina of Time is 'so overrated'. I did my best not to banish him from the house and listen to what he had to say. For him he just found it not as interesting in story content as the other games.

I know I have rose tinted glasses on where Ocarina is concerned because it was the first Zelda game I ever played and it will always hold a special place in my heart.... but.... is my nephew right? Has it aged badly? Is it not as great as we remembered?

Like many old games the game did age because it's of several generations ago, but I still love it. I wouldn't say it aged badly. It held up for a good amount of time and it's still fun on the 3DS, but as a main title I don't think it's the best Zelda game anymore. I do think Breath of the Wild has taken over that mantle. Btw you did bitchslap our nephew right?

No I behaved myself. Besides Nephew II started on about Breath of the Wild being bad, so then me and Nephew the Elder put aside our differences to fight the real war :D

Some games age super well and others not so much.

Honestly Ocarina never impressed me really, I just never got into it even though I played it way back "in the day". It just wasn't what I was after with an RPG game.

Then again I think if the graphics were brought up to Breath of the Wind level and a few features improved or bolstered up then the game, at its core, would still be fun. It might not "beat" the other game and chances are it would aim at a younger audience; but there's nothing bad in either of those things.

Heck look at Angry birds or Pokemon - both are super simplistic games at their core (heck pokemon hasn't really changed ever in any big way).

Well I wouldn't call Zelda an RPG. It's an action-adventure game with RPG features perhaps, but not a full fledged RPG. I don't think I can't even call it a JRPG. Breath of the Wild was more like an RPG game though.

True it is more an action game, though I find RPG and action can often swap over fairly readily with some titles. It depends on how you define RPG and what you weight it too - some weight it to levels and experience; others to the story; some to story choices etc...

I have the ocarina 3d remaster on DS. I've yet to play it though. How much of an effort should I make to do so?

Definitely play it, I have it on the 3DS also. In fact it was the main reason I got a 3DS along with Majora's Mask. I don't have any other games for that console lol It's a pure Zelda machine.
