Recently I think it is the discovery of Atom - or Maxwell equations, man, the dude is so underappreciated.

As BBC-Earth has it, in chronological order, 'The 25 Biggest Turning Points in Earth's History'... The 25 biggest turning points in Earth’s history

Keep in mind that if any of the listed 25 events doesn't happen, and happen within a window of opportunity, we wouldn't exist. Next time you stop to smell the roses... be amazed that flowering plants and grasses are relatively new to the scene, in geological terms of course, and that both bacteria and the Earth's flora are the foundation of all higher life forms.
You are more bacteria than you are you. We think in terms of "The Age of the Dinosaurs", or "The Age of Mammals"... it's only ever been and always will be, "The Age of Bacteria".
