So who's your favorite contemporary "painter"/ artist?
Maybe you'll find a picture from him on google that comes close to the original one?
You could tell us name, style and what's so great about his pictures...
And where you've seen him or heard from him first.

I'll start out if you don't mind :)
(oh and I don't really care what kind of art it is, it just should be art...)

PS.: Does this belong in the art-house? I don't know, but anyways.

My favorite contemporary painter is Peter Doig. He's originally from Scotland I guess and currently lives in... Germany? Oh wow, I didn't know that ^^ ooops.
Anyways, I first saw his pictures in a gallery in Frankfurt.

The thing that makes his pictures so awesome is partly the size, that sometimes makes it rather confusing to figure out what you're looking at.
He puts the color on very thickly, and drops all over his pictures, making them look abstract and sometimes magical.
If they weren't so darn expensive, I would certainly buy one if his pieces :)

P.S.: this picture I posted is one of my favorites from him and is of course much larger in real live. And you stand in front of it, staring at it and don't get it why everything is upside down, because the last place you look at is somehow the top - which explains everything of course ^^

Konstantinos Volanakis a greek painter that was born in Crete and lived in Piraeus. He worked with oil paints.

Roger Dean looks pretty amazing, Sparrow! Is your Desktop background from him too? (I hope I remember that correctly from the Post your Desktop thread)

And Volanakis reminds me a lot of Caspar David Friedrich, though Friedrich died a hundred years ago or something.... (oh I do love Friedrich, so Volanakis is a good one too =))

:) i think that you wanted a live artist. Well volanakis is dead... actually i don't know good painters that live. When i was in Munich i saw some painters on the streets but i guess these persons are not famous and i don't know how to find their works.

Yep, it's his 'Blue Desert' painting on my desktop... I purchased a couple sets of desktop pics from his website some years ago. He did most of the artwork for the Yes album covers as well as design some of their concert stages. Roger Dean and Frank Frazetta are probably my two favorite artists.

Frank Frazetta is a legend... unfortunately he died not too long ago.

well... yeah, his style didn't look very contemporary. ^^ But your favorite painter doesn't have to be famous :)

Up till now I knew neither of them and I didn't know the band. Good thing you introduced me to them :D

I tend to favour more illustration type art, my favourites being Keith Thompson and Kate McElroy. Not painters, but no less art, unless you don't consider illustration art. I can't think of any modern painters that I could give a toss about, since I'm really not a fan of modern styles.

Yes i know that a favorite painter doesn't have to be famous. I only said that cause the german guys that knew in Munich who painted on the streets are not famous so i can't find how to show you their paints... its not easy to find some of their works in the web.
