The reason why I put LOTR swords seperate from fantasy is becuase they really are not fantasy, they are in there own type of group.

I put Medieval, Historical, and LotR. I like the LotR ones because they don't look at all unrealistic, and they are based off real designs.

I voted LotR, Medieval, and Historical. While I like both Oriental and (most) Fantasy Swords, I wouldn't collect them. My choices were my faves and are all represented in my collection. My main fave category would have to be Movie Swords, though. I like being able to watch my collection "in action". Each of my weapons are in some of my favorite movies...
Narsil and Shards (take a wild guess)
    Ulrich Sword (A Knight's Tale)
Sword of Tigris of Gaul (Gladiator)
    Phoenix Knife (Star Trek:Generations)

Hehe. I'm the same way, although that includes oriental swords for me. Which is why I bought an official Highlander katana reproduction. Of course, with that stylish handle, it's uniquely interesting for a katana. But pretty much every quality sword I have is from a movie. And most made by United Cutlery, in fact:

Zorro's rapier from Mask of Zorro
    Indiana Jones' khyber bowie knife
Various Lord of the Rings replicas,
    including Narsil, Glamdring, Sting,
    Witchking, and Ringwraith swords.

I'm voting medieval and LOTR coz the basic design of the medieval blades are swords at their finest, and LOTR because things like anduril and glamdring are like medeival swords only a lot cooler yet remaining realistic.

I didn't know you could put more than one, so I just voted for LOTR swords as my top favorites.

But I would rank them in this order:

    LOTR
    fantasy
    oriental
    Medieval
    Historical

Lord of the Rings swords are probably some of the best swords I've ever seen. I have Glamdring and Sting and intend to get most if not all of the others.

I'm interested in fantasy the most. It is true that a lot of fantasy swords are far fetched, there are some cool designs I like (The Swords of the Ancients, my Heron Marked sword, and some others I can think of)

I put oriental next for one reason: I like the feel and the way my katana (a replica from Highlander) handles more than the medieval swords I have.

The Medieval swords I do like tend to have a more fantasy flair to them (my Bowen Sword from Dragonheart)

And as I said, I prefer fantasy so historical swords come last.

My best swords are also all replicas:

Sting and Glamdring from Lord of the Rings
    Bowen's Sword from Dragonheart
    Dragonhead Katana from Highlander
Zorro sword from the Mask of Zorro
    Sir Ulrich's Sword from A Knight's Tale

and while not a movie or TV weapon...

Heron Marked sword from the Wheel of Time

    my thoughts exactly

LOTR- they just look so awesome...and if you make a custom, its made to be fought with...the design i mean...(whoever understood that gets a big ol cookie)

Medieval- these are swords at their finest

Oriental- i basicially voted this for 2 reasons...the katana is arguably the best weapon in history...and oriental swords include a lot of...shall we say...novelty weapons...? not joking novelty, but like a short staff that pulls apart at the middle and get 2 swords/polearms

Historical- this is the stuff that conqured the world...those Gladiuses (sp) and the way the Romans used them are just incredible

My vote goes to Oriental, Medieval and LOTR.

Oriental - Stylish, and they seem to be the epitome (sp?) of grace.
Medieval - Because they look awesome
LOTR - About as Fantasy-ish as i like my swords. Especially Narsil and The Witch King Blade.

as much as I love my lotr sword, I like my japanese samurai sword better. There's just that felling that its carbon steel, razor sharp, and its very lightweight. Unlike the lotr swords
