LMAO. Yep been there. This is why you always back up your system.
Why did it cost you $150? Have to take it to a tech guy?

windows sponge no doubt (ie all of them)

I back up my entire HD onto an SSD, complete Copy, meaning I can run windows from that drive on my pc or another if need be with all my drivers, files, programs etc and windows installed and registered.
Make a habit once every few months.
    Ah the beauty of SSD's

You can google programs to help you in the future jim if that is what you wanna do.

A workmate's personal Surface got hosed by a recent update, it killed the wifi so he couldn't even get online to try and fix anything, and like Jim, system restore failed on him. I was able to reinstall the relevant drivers but we as a workplace have studiously avoided Windows 8 as long as possible. But Windows 7 will have to go some time soon, and I am not looking forward to the learning curve for our whole school environment. If it confuses us IT guys who play with computers all day every day, how are the teachers going to cope that can barely find the On button as it is now???

Windows update on 8.1 is a ###### nightmare ~ I've never seen as many blue screens of death or been totally frozen out of windows entirely. I've always backed up regularly both by disk cloning and imaging (I use Macrium Reflect ~ there's a free version available too ~ for the imaging & rescue disk) but it is so irritating that Microsoft's flagship product is so crap. Mind you I detest Windows 8 anyway, it was a huge step backwards imho from both 7 & XP, as it dumbs everything down to moron level ~ I recommend Classic Shell which preserves your sanity a little.

yeah... w10 is a bit of an improvement, though... I mean it's too early to say, but it seems to be at least better than w8.1 :)... on the other hand almost anything is better than a turd :D
