Who here will be reading 'The Casual Vacancy'? The new book by Jo Rowling that has nothing at all to do with the Harry Potter series.

I will definitely be buying it. Even though it may not be fantasy or anything to do with that but she has certainly proven herself to be a very capable author.

lol - it's due on my birthday :p

It's got me curious, though. I suppose it depends on the price tag the book carries.

    Thanks for the tip ^^

I'm 34th in line for 28 copies at the library :p We'll see. It doesn't sound all that intriguing, but I freely admit I was late to the HP party because I thought it sounded silly.

How wrong I was haha. :D

Quite a bold move publishing a very different style of book under the same author name. I've known some authors will publish different kinds of fantasy work under different pen names - and if I were in her shoes I'd be apt to want to do the same - just so as my works could stand on their own and not on the shoulders of HP mania ;)

    Good for you err...

but why not? I mean, we are a fantasy forum and all, but the world doesn't start or end wit fantasy(/sci fi)... The world is much bigger than that? There's so much more going on which you aren't going to find out about when you just stick to what you know, right?

Well mostly cause I've read lots of books in most other genres and neither of them have interested me as much as fantasy genre ones does. :) That way, i now know better than to waste my time on books i wont enjoy. Although i do from time to time pick up some other books, if i get recommended or find a book with really high ratings. Sooo.. which i might enjoy if im lucky... the world might be bigger than that. But ive explored it for many years and always gotten disappointed. There's my answer.

I do enjoy me some nice scary books from example: Dean R Koontz or historical books as well, not all fantasy. But mostly. I hate books like; biogrophies or "my dad molested me - books".. got enough crap in my life to read books that makes me feel even worse :p

I don't think there's any issue with her using the same name. After all she didn't use a pen name for Harry Potter, aside from adding in the "k" then it's her actual name. She clearly ins't into using pen names and just wants everything she does to be under her name. I understand that.

I actually just finished it a little while ago and I liked it quite a lot. I enjoyed the start, but it did drag a little in the middle. Once it picked up again though it was amazing and I couldn't put it down. Great ending.

I hope Rowling writes more fantasy... would be a waste if she didn't... maybe something in the same world, but for grown ups? e.g. something about auras

I think it's good that she's branching out, exploring all types of work that she wants to explore. I'd hate her to feel limited to one thing just because of her success with Harry Potter. I did read in an interview that she's considering writing another book in the Harry Potter Universe, but I think she wanted to write it for young children.

Can't wait to read this book. I've read good things about it so far.

I just have to get through my current stack though... :(
