Let's revive this topic, shall we?

Do you think ROTK will be able to climb to the top of the all-time box office list, surpassing "Titanic"?

It sure would have to make a lot of money, but hey, it could.

It has a slight chance. Though I doubt it highly for the simple fact that it is aimed a certain genre while the number one movie is a general movie.

I voted maybe. I doubt that it will surpass Titanic, but it might come close. I can already tell its better than FotR and TTT though.

I agree with the above. LoTR, while possibly one of the greatest stories of all time, just doesn't have the appeal to the same audience. I know some girls who paid to go see Titanic 10, 15, even 20 times ( I kid you not...they were obsessed) JUST because of Leonardo DeCaprio.

It may lead the Sci-Fi / Fantasy genre's though. :D

Don't you think there are plenty of girls who went to see both movies just because of Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood? I could name a few...

It will definitely lead the sci-fi fantasy genre. The only other real contender there is Star Wars, and I don't think any of the new Star Wars movie coming out will beat ROTK.

    I voted Maybe.

Sicerely I don't want to make supossitions until I see the movie, I will be the first to reserve his ticket and one of the few hundreds dessed with TLOTR theme in the theatre but until the movie ends I will not expect anything, we cannot know what's comming with the movie... I mean not in the way the things will happens, everyone know what's going on... :D

Let's see what the movie is going to offer us.

PD: Titanic is not one of my favourite movies... :p

I voted maybe. As I said in the old topic, I would like it to, but I think it is not very likely. I think it will definately get very high up, maybe to second place, but I don't think it will beat that boat-load of crap.(Pardon the pun, I could not resist:D )

how could 2 people say no? I know it will beat any other sci fi or fantasy easy, and plus it is a final movie, the big chuawawa, its going to be a blockbuster. I will be seening it the minute it comes out in theatres, twice in a row, then once a week after that.... It'll rock

I really hope that it will. I said maybe.
The problem with Titanic was all the stupid teen girls going to see Leonardo DiCaprio, and all the stupid teen boys going to see nudity in a PG-13 movie...
I'm happy to say I didn't contribute to those sales at all. I waited until video.

As for RotK, it should be huge. I know it'll break the 1 billion mark and make it to #2. But Titanic had 1.8 billion in sales. That could be a bit hard. However, all of us Tolkien fans on the board I typically post at are promising to see it at least 4 times and to take big groups each time. I know a professor at my college that takes her class to the theater. She did it for FotR and TTT. Now she's doing it for RotK. She really wants to see it beat Titanic, as most of us do.

That ship has been #1 for too long. I hope RotK is the iceburg to take it out!!!

With no Harry Potter to compete with this year it should top Two Towers by a bit.

I voted absolutely, though I admit that's what I'd like to see happen, not what I actually think will definitely happen. I'm more than willing to do my part to get it to #1, though. ;)

If anyone finds themselves without anything to do on New Years Eve, try going to see the last show of the night of RotK. That's what my husband and I did last year with TTT, and while the theater was only half full, all of us were serious hard core geeks, so it was a lot of fun.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if more teenaged girls go to see this for Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood than did with FotR or TTT. The hysteria has had three years to build and spread. ;)

But don't be too hard on the fan-girls. One of my most entertaining viewings of FotR was in early spring of 2002, and we sat directly behind three girls who squealed every time Legolas came on screen. It was very funny. By the end of the movie, my whole group had joined in in one way or another, either cheering for Legolas, or cheering for another character as a counter-point. It almost certainly would have bugged me during the first or second time I saw it, but being that that was the fifth or sixth time, it really didn't bother me at all.
