Lotr is the start of fantasy genre imo
LoTR created the genre of Epic Fantasy and was one of the first successful stories to be set in secondary-world. It was the culmination if a decade of world building, conlang development, culture and history development, and several other things... all of which are the basis of modern fantasy stories.
I don't think its the "best" fantasy by a long shot... there are tons of issues a critic could highlight... its significance is that it was the first, and the impact it had on the genre thereafter is really undeniable. It did the same thing for fantasy that Star Trek did for mainstream sci-fi, or that Toy Story did for CGI. It's a landmark, not "the best story".
A friend told me yesterday that sometimes Tolkien mixed up names or nicknames of characters. That's a bit sloppy
