Why didn't Gandolph just use an eagle to destroy the Ring?

Instead of having a hobbit take the ring all the way to Mt. Doom and throw it in, why didn't Gandolph just get on the back of an eagle, fly to Mt. Doom, and throw it in?

    1. Gandolph flew on the backs of the eagles a number of times (they rescued him from Isengard, and he flew with them again in rescuing Sam and Frodo from Mt. Doom).

    2. the eagles showed in ROTC that they could put up a good fight with the Nasgul.

    3. Yes, Frodo made an attempt to give the ring to Gandolph, and Gandolph refused it, but Gandolph wouldn't have had to wear the ring. He could have kept in in that envelope in his pocket until he got to Mt. Doom and dropped the envelope into Doom.

Firtsly, its Gandalf, and secondly, well there are a number of reasons. As Turgon stated, there wouldn't be a story at all, and despite what the movie shows, Gandalf is not in control of the great Eagles, and they choose to bear him or not.

Another reason, which I believe Gandalf even states in the movie, is that even he is not incorruptible. And through him the Ring would wield a terrible power.

Ofcourse he doesn't HAVE to put on the Ring. But neither does Bilbo, neither does Frodo. The Ring has its own powers over its owner, even Gandalf doubts his ability to not want to use it (for good).

In the movie, yes they fight the Nazgul for a bit, but they are destroyed when the Ring is, so its not like the Eagles won the battle, and we really don't know who would win in an all out brawl between the two. Remember, the Nazgul cannot be killed, though their mounts could be.

Well, I hope that clears some of that up for you :)

Tolkien also stated that he didn't want to eagles to simply be the taxi cabs of Middle Earth.

I think if the eagles had gotten the ring all the forces of Mordo and Isengard would have been after them. They would have been shot down by orcs, the Nagul would probably have killed them, and it would have been to hard to take the ring to Mount Doom without detection. It was easier for the Hobbits because they were so small and were able to hide in Mordor and sneek their way up to Mount Doom. The eagles would have been flying and everyone would have seen them.

I agree that Gandalf throwing the ring from the back of an eagle would be very unclimactic.

It would work, and he could have brought Frodo with him so he wouldn't have to be taken by the ring.

do we even need to discuss this?
And it's not at all about throwing some ring in some mountain but Destroing THE Ring.. And if it was such an easy thing Isildur should have done it sooome time ago..

Isildor was corrupted by the ring. When he was presented with the chance to destroy it, he refused.

I think there was a YouTube vid. doing exactly this. It was quite funny, but for a proper book, it would have had no story to it. Also, I don't think it would necessarily have worked. Sauron was out looking for the ring. If a few winged objects come flying into Mordor, you're going to take a lot of notice of them, in which case you would realise at a very early stage that they are bearing The Ring. It needed something subtler, I think. Something less expected, so that it would surprise Sauron.
