Tysha, the alleged 'crofter's daughter', is assumed to be a whore by Tyrion, but in aSoS, Jaime tells his brother that Tysha was not, in fact, the whore that Tywin claimed her to be.

Which do you think she is? Whore, or common girl, chance married to Tyrion?

I always thought that Tysha was a whore, but she actually did love Tyrion. It was my understanding that Tywin and Jaime told Tyrion she didn't love him, and she was just after his money in order to get rid of her. After all, I'm sure Tywin would feel that his son's association with prostitutes would be bringing great shame upon his house.

    *spoiler*

I haven't read this in awhile but doesn't Jaime tell Tyrion at the end of SoS that Tysha wasn't really a whore? And that's why Tyrion admits to killing Joff, just to get back at him?

Yup, it all happened as Tyrion initially thought, then Tywin forced Jaime to pretend she was a whore. It wasn't associating with whores but low-class women in general that Tywin objected to (and I'm sure marrying her without his consent didn't help). Tywin showed how much of a hypocrite he was when he took Shae to his bed.

See that's what I was wondering. Did Jaime just tell Tyrion 'the truth' about Tysha because he wanted Tyrion to confess, or was he serious?

He was serious, not only was it confirmed by Tywin but Jaime had been thinking about it for a long time. "I am despised when I should be loved and loved for a kindness I never did." (or words to that effect)

Jaime's confession to Tyrion was part of his ongoing change of character.
