In my opinion Tom Bombadil is Tolkien himself. Or he is Ilúvatar who somehow manifested. ;) Why not?
Or he is both, because I associate Tolkien with Ilúvatar.
I don't know if this can be true, it's just what I think.

Heh, if I had to choose a theory, I'd choose the one with Tom being a Maia under Aule and Yavanna.

Ok so my friend thinks that since Tom had the power to destroy the ring and sauron, or keep sauron from the ring, that tom is in some form an emmissary or spirit of illuvatar....any info to clear this up would be great...

Yeah, I believe he was a personification of the English countryside Tolkien loved so much, and he embodied the love of nature that was a big theme in LOTR.

That's probably the most accurate theory.

Tom's a mystery, and I guess he'll stay a mystery, as Tolkien's dead and can't answer our questions.

We are told at the Council of Elrond that two of Tom's alternative names are Forn and Orald. Crossword solvers immediately see the anagram:

    [For Ronald]

Ronald, of course, is part of J.R.R. Tolkien's name: John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.

Just a Coincidence? Probably, but its as good as it gets as a guess without a lot of research.

    *EDIT* Incorrect spelling, *shudder*

I always thought that Tom Bombadil was middle earth, he always has and always will be, so will middle earth no matter what the dark powers do to the world there will always be a world so there will always be a Tom. as for power on my theory he stands aside he maybe more powerfull than gods but in a different way if you get my meaning, like the pope is powerful but not in the same way as a king or emperor. I read somewhere that Goldberry was a nymph or something.

Yeah he's VERY powerful. And his essence is what keeps his neck of the woods peaceful and serene. No evil goes to his home. It would take a power behond comprehension to throw him off his normal schedule. At least that's how I feel.

Tom Bombadil is just about anything you want him to be. It says he is master but he isn't master of anywhere according to his own account (or the account of Goldberry). His voice has a magical effect on others but at the same time it is not omnipotent.

It would seem that Tom is the ultimate ruler of...himself. Nothing else has a hold on his mind. Of course he thinks a lot about Goldberry. He seems to be content with his singing and running and stuff. He's a really happy guy, but hey if you looked like Tom and got a really hot water nyphm as a wife, you would be dancing around all day too. I'm sure he gets as much as he wants. hahahaha

This is the debate section, so why don't you tell us why you don't like him and what you find annoying about Tom, and how it relates to "what" or "who" he is
