Simple question: who are your favorite songwriters/lyricists?

My favorite is Bob Dylan. If you bother to really listen to his lyrics throughout the years, you will come to appreciate that he is a true poet; I don't think anyone else comes close. And he has always been so versatile - careful not to get trapped in any box for two long. As multiple times he purposefully went against fame. He has done so much to inspire music as we know it, and he deserved the Nobel Prize, certainly.

Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
    With one hand waving free
    Silhouetted by the sea
    Circled by the circus sands
    With all memory and fate
    Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

Others, in no order (and excusing that I'm certainly forgetting some):
    • Laura Marling
    • George Harrison (though often overshadowed by the other Beatles, he was brilliant)
    • Marika Hackman (the poetry of her first fews LPs can't be ignored)
    • Courtney Barnett
    • Matt Berninger (of the National)
    • Yoni Wolf
    • Morrissey (even though he is a total pr**k of a person).

Agree with Bob Dylan and George Harrison. My favourite of the latter is 'Try Some, Buy Some', which I think is just a masterpiece. While I love John and Paul's stuff too, I think as a solo artist George was the best of the three.

If we're talking lyricists, I'd put Leonard Cohen up there with those already mentioned. If you haven't heard the album Songs From a Room, you may want to.

For me, Gene Clarke is one of the most underrated songwriters of all time. His album No Other, is amazing.

A couple of modern picks, for me, would be Robin Pecknold from the Fleet Foxes and Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys.

David Bowie. Arthur Lee. Peter Green. Ian Brown. Ricky Ross...
