sillmarillion - as I can see almost everybody like it the most.
Why? I don't like history, but it was so magnificently wrote, that I have read everything in one day.
But... before i read Silmarillion, I like "Two Towers" the most.

I'm reading the silmarillion now, and I have to say, indeed, it could be better than LotR. I haven't finished it yet (by far not, I'm reading two books at the moment :D ) but at the moment I like it more than LotR, and definetly more than the Hobbit (be it the bad translation (yes I read it in dutch, bad me) I don't know) which I liked, but no way as much as the LotR.

There's something about the Hobbit that does it for me. The Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales most definitely after that.

I like the story from the Silmarillion better, but it was not such a great book. Perhaps if he had gotten to finish it, or break it up and go in depth in each section/story but as is it reads like a history book. And while history books are interesting and have some fascinating stories, they are not in themselves good books.

It's been awhile since the last time I read them, so I'm really not sure which of the others is my favorite.

I haven't read the Silmarillion, and the Hobbit is my favorite, no doubt about it.

LotR ~ for readability and that he hints at so much 'history' which you can then find out more about in The Silmarillion & Unfinished Tales. The Hobbit is okay too but a long way down the Tolkien list.

I would say the Silmarillion hands down.

Seems I'm for once agreeing with the majority, I prefer the Silmarillion because it is simply so much more powerful than the rest, if that makes any sense.

The Simarillion is an awesome set of stories but the LOTR is the better book. Inspiring story, great characters, tied together flawlessly. I'd have to say that I enjoyed the LOTR more...but maybe only because it takes longer to read.

For me, Lord of the Rings--especially the little corners of it that come to life so well: the Old Forest, complete with Bombadil; Lothlorien, which has haunted me for 40 years; Fanghorn...it goes on and on. Maybe it's just that Tolkien has done the work for me in these--he has brought them totally alive. The Silmarillion is much more sterile.

The beauty, though, is that we don't need to choose. We can read them all,
