sheesj you're fast, I started this poll just a minute ago.

I also voted for the Silmarillion because I think it's much larger and complexer than LoTR. (and ofcourse: I like the characters better)

    hmm, like Bolt also.

The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, the Silmarillion because it reveals much of ME's history and Unfinished Tales because it fills in a lot of holes, especially about the Istari.

I love the Silmarillion - my copy is a tattered jewel, worn from unnumbered readings. My reasons - the mythology, the sense of such a larger picture, and the wars...oh, the wars!!!! *swoons* Although they were not elaborate in writing, JRRT's wars of Beleriand were epic and unparalleled. The sorrow, the pain, the bloodshed - what is not to like?

I also like the many other, posthumously published, books, especially the HoME series.

I loved The hobbit since I was a child, the LOTR was to slow of a story.

This is one of a tough question, the stories in Silmarillion are the best, but they are not narrated as well as in LOTR, The Hobbit is very cool, but the story is the shortest (time-wise), so every book has its own qualities and drawbacks.

I can't believe I haven't replied to this thread before, but anyways, I will have to definitely go with the LOTR as my favorite Tolkien book. More specifically it would be the FOTR.

Umm, I haven't read the Silmarillion yet (please don't kill me...)(how embarassing for a LotR fan *beats herself* I will better myself) I started some months ago and then I lost the book. I dind't find it and I am too lazy to borrow it from someone, so I just can say:
From the triology: The Return of the king, and then the other two
but the hobbit is also very very good
So to make this right, I have to read the Sil and then I'll come back and say my opinion.
