Oh, come on. This is very simple. Aragorn is King of Middle-Eart, basically. I think it would be very strange if he would go to the West. after all, the Elves bailed out and left Middle-Earth to Mankind, under the reign of the Numenorean line of Kings. He couldn't go into the West, due to the new order; Aragorn was the new order, after the Elves left. "Visiting" the west would be out of the question; there was no way back.

When did anyone talk about Aragorn going into the west? by West I assume you mean the Undying lands, we (well not really me) have been refer about him going to the Gray Havens, not further.

Although I do understand you point that we's got to put order into ME and he was most likely still sorting out Gonder and the eastern realm, he had still not rode north to re-enstate Arnor as he said he would (or I think he did)

Wasn't it the normal thing for the King of Gondor to hold his seat the majority of the time in Arnor..and if so, maybe that's why he wasn't there? Or...can't quite remember...had he even re-established Arnor by this time?

Either way, it's a big mystery and from the looks of it, we'll never know unless we somehow rewrite the story.

Maybe it was just too painfull to see the people that he almost died for ( several times ) leaving Middle Earth for good.

I think shinagani's point is correct. what if Aragorn was waylaid by orcs? what if he accidently fell? what would have happened if Aragorn were to die?? Disastrous!!

Aragon, as Strider said, said his good-byes to the fellowship before they left. Besides, Aragon is the new King of Gondor. He probaly had important work to do.

    look very carefully

ARAGORN DOES NOT GO TO THE GREY HAVENS BECAUSE HE IS NONE OF THE FOLLOWING

    HIGH ELVEN
    A RING BEARER
    AN ELF FRIEND

All of these things prevent him from going to the grey havens as stated by Tolkien... sorry

I think it would have been too painful to say their goodbyes again... and I agree with the others that he might not have gotten the news until too late.

He's not the king of all Middle Earth, just Gondor. He's very influential though over all the lands on Middle Earth. If he had complete rule over all of Middle Earth then he would be a dictator and I don't think Tolkien wanted that.

This is a good Thread, respect.
I asked myself this question long ago, but I found no answer.
And still I can't give an answer, why he didn't appear, but I can try to explain:
At the end of part three he says goodbey to the hobbits, so he said goodbye to Frodo.
Perhaps he said goodbye to Elrond, when he left Gondor after A&A's merriage.
And I think Gandalf bit farewell short before he went to leave Middle Earth.
So, if this all would have been as I think, There's just Bilbo left, right?
    Result: I am wrong.
It's a pitty, Aragorn don't says goodbye, but the book is written and we can't change it...

I think that Aragorn & Arwen had said their goodbye's..Arwen had given up The last ship to the west...Maybe they thought it better too leave things as they were.

Did Aragorn not have the palantir from Orthanc still? I haven't read the books in a while, so I don't know if he did and if so how far he could see with it.

I think he just didn't go because it was a very private affair. Frodo was trying to sneak off without even telling Merry and Pippen. I just don't think they wanted a whole lot of people there. Just opinion though.

He may have wanted to go, but his duties probably held him in one place.
