I think you are close on that observation. Though the root of the hard feelings ran a bit deeper than that. Thingol employed the Dwarves to built the set for the Silmaril. During that time the Dwarves realized both the value and beuty of the Sil' and the value of their own work. When they approached Thingol saying that they needed more of a payment the battle insued from there. Basically, my take on it is that the whole thing was caused over lust for the Silmaril. Also, in the BoLT I think that Thingol gave the Dwarves the cursed gold from Glaurond's lair, which they never made it home with.
