I think you are close on that observation. Though the root of the hard feelings ran a bit deeper than that. Thingol employed the Dwarves to built the set for the Silmaril. During that time the Dwarves realized both the value and beuty of the Sil' and the value of their own work. When they approached Thingol saying that they needed more of a payment the battle insued from there.

Basically, my take on it is that the whole thing was caused over lust for the Silmaril.

Also, in the BoLT I think that Thingol gave the Dwarves the cursed gold from Glaurond's lair, which they never made it home with.

This is what I was going to say. The dwarves were unconcerned with the rest of the world. They were isolated and chose to be so. :)

In response to the Lady, there was a quote in the book saying that every species in Middle Earth were split during the Last Alliance. The Elves were the only exception, all of them being against Sauron.

I beleive that this is out of the appendicies. Something about how Khazad-Dum was to powerful and populated for Sauron to overcome on his first big rampage. I beilive during the War of the ring, the dwarves wwere just trying to orgonize. When people say that they were not concerned with the troubles of others, that probably included sauron wich kind of prooves that they wouldn't side with him. Erebor was doing well until Sauron's orks came and drove the king of Dale to the mountain gates and there a big battle happend. I think that both the king of Dale and The King Under the Mountain died.

(OFF SUBJECT) Why are ther a bunch of smilies undr my name?
