Ive read all the books to dragons of a summer flame and then I read the war of souls trilogy but it seems like I missed something, was I supposed to read the chaos war series first?

    Dragons of Chaos

Dragons of a New Age (Trilogy)

    * Dawning of a New Age, The
    * Day of the Tempest, The
    * Eve of the Maelstrom, The

All these set up War of Souls to some extent but I dont remember which are more important. I do remember that I cant stand Jean Rabe's writing in Tempest or Maelstrom.

The problem is that the books get real chaotic here... Some 5th age series follow old heroes, some the new dragons, and some new heroes. I expect Bridges of Time, The Dhamon Saga and The Chaos War series' are supposed to be important, but I never read most of them.

This guy reccomends Dragons of a New Age and The Dhamon Saga: http://www.dl3e.com/products/reading.aspx
