Let's say you live in the 18th or 19th Century and you live in an area and that part of land where you live is going to come under control or protection of one of the big power of the time.Which power would you want to be a colony of if you had to choose and why?

Remember that it would probably mean cultural influences and education on the standards of that country as well as all the typical colonial obligations of the time!

People who already come from such places just...imagine that you could choose if you lived back then and vote!:p

    Great Britain

If it had been earlier some of the others (including the Portuguese) may have been worth considering but 18th & 19th C, the British Empire was pretty much at it's peak

The main difference between the various european empires of that period was the Royal Navy which was indisputably the most powerful navy in the world Sadly it's now a mere shadow of that .

I have to vote Great Britain - least if you get to be in one of the rich families its a good choice! Then you have not only pots of cash, but also the world at your feet!

If, though, you were to be at the lower end of the spectrum - as in a working class peon, then I might be tempted for another nation - possibly the US - the reason being that being at the bottom is not very nice and working out of it in GB at that time was hard to impossible to achive - least out in the colonies you have a greater chance of getting up in the world = course death from poison and illness is a risk

even then Fion it was hard to move up ranks - a commoner would not reach a high rank easily - only outstanding skill and luck would get you there. The upper classes would move into the army as well and would take the upper positions of power - and then many would keep the lower commoners in the commoner ranks, thus preventing some from moving up rank.
This worked as only the upper classes were fully educated - putting them on a higher level than your commoner to start with

I am sort of troubled by the choices.

Surely, all these nations have been superpowers in their days. But that always came with responsibilities, something they all failed to uphold. None of these have accomplished without committing artrocities. The spanaird had their way with the Indians, the French were ruthless in finding expansion - and dealt with these areas especially poorly. The Brits - or actually England - went at great lengths to keep their empire in shape. And the Dutch... sort of invented slavery - and colonialism.

The Germans always fancied themselves a superpower - and to some extend, they were up to about 1918, but was never able to exploit that power since the middle ages (the Holy Roman Empire).

    I vote blank :)

I voted for the netherlands. I want Belgium to unite with it, to become a larger stronger country. I think the Dutch should see the advantage of it too lol
