The whole so and so is the god of fantasy is annoying with or with out a smiley, we can't all be expected to have the same taste, It just so happens we (Liadan and I) have similar taste so it doesn't annoy me when she does it. :D

A couple of the books suck. Temple of the Winds was a complete yawn, and I hated the Pillars of Creation, but all the others more than make up for them.

Faith of the Fallen is awesome.

Lol, I don't really care as long as they have the smileys - everyone has his/her own opinion, and this forum exists so that we could offer our own opinions on books and discuss them, right? But people just saying "So and so is the god of fantasy" repeatedly without including a smiley to indicate a joke... well, it could get heated pretty quickly. :)

Jeez I leave this place for one moment and all hades breaks loose. Look guys. Like who you like and if you get another addict to your series then great. That's all grand but stop with the this author is God garbage. It's getting really old. We are here to give suggestions and not fight amongst each other about who's the best. Everyone has their own opinion and whether somebody else likes it is up to them. So we'll leave the suggestion to the person who asked. Relax people.

Okay I've read all the 'usual' fantasy series but has anyone found any hidden gems which aren't often discussed on this forum? Perhaps some local (national) author who's book's are worth searching for as they didn't make it big internationally?

As a PS to this post I haven't seen any posts on the Thomas Covenant books ~ what do you all think of these? I must admit first time I read them I didn't get into them at all but I reread them last year and enjoyed them ....

Uh, I'm not exactly sure why you brought this up again, given that Warlock and I resolved our differences peacefully.

Elladan, have you read Kate Eliott's "Crown of Stars" series? It's a little hard to get through, but I loved the series myself. :)

I have read them, and admit at first I didn't take them as "true" fantasy, but I re read them 6 months ago and enjoyed them a lot! It is good to read an Author who "thinks outside the square" as too much fantasy is Tolkein based, with the usual characters (elves etc etc).
I found some of Clive Barkers work is in a similar vein to Steven Donaldson's so is worth checking out. Also H.P Lovecrafts "The Dream Quest of the Unknown Kaddath" which is probably the Grandaddy of all "Alternate" reality stories.

Dennis L. McKiernan is pretty good to. I just wish books would have come chronologically.

^ Thanks everyone ~ I've read Eliott & some of Barkers but I'll check out your other suggestions :)

^^ Comfan ~ I enjoyed Timeline by Michael Crichton but what a total disappointment the film was ~
I'd give it 0/10 or perhaps 1/10 on a more generous day :D

I read The Mirror of Her draems by Stephen Donaldson (I think that's his name) and I was desperate to find the sequel, A Man Rides Through. That was a few years ago, and I'm still looking. But on the inside of the front cover and the back cover were filled with illustrations of Thomas Covenant's books for some reason.
