You talking about the little coloured bars below the user's post count?

Well, a loooooong time ago, we had a sort of credit system. Every post you made gave you credits. These credits, in turn, alowed you to... customize your account, like changing names, the colour of your name and some other random stuff I have forgotten about.

Basically, this led to a spam war. People would make posts just for the sake of getting points (and showing them off against other members, ofc). I am sure some people managed to make a 1000 posts a week. Although fun, this was a crazy time - and after some time, the system was abandoned.

At the same time, the reputation system was set up. Donating points to other people gave you reputation; stealing points (yes, this too was possible), gave you negative reputation. The reputation system stayed, albeit only by positive/negative feedback.

Hm... seems like it was a good idea to take it away.

but that does sound quite cool.
