That's because the entire forum is (Becoming) a spam forum.
You get a banner on your profile that claims you're the "poster of the month" and top place on "Contributors". If that is purely obtainable through countless posts (I'm guilty of it too) consisting of "YEEEEEEEET" or "dudes -1", then it needs re-evaluating, given it's utter pointlessness.
Spam posts counting isn't a problem, however the heavy abundance of spammy/chatty threads could be seen to be an issue since such threads are dominating and not promoting chatter outside and along with our core site focus.
Right now there's a move toward trying a softer approach of encouraging use outside of those threads and promoting other activities. For example the revival of the Book Club and opening it up to all members, not just a select number.
This is a steady process as we bring in more things and get them up to speed rather tahn trying to oversaturate too many things at once (which could burn out mods or just overload things).
This is preferable to having to throttle spam back in some form.
How does this help to control spam? Currently TFF is mostly a spam forum, and maybe that's why people aren't staying. There's no real content since reviving old threads to saturate with new opinions isn't allowed, and new threads become clustered with spam.
Each feature/area we focus on promotes activity in that area and the content should generally drift back toward fantasy. There's a lot of chatter at present because everyone came back almost at once so there's lots of general "oh hey how are you " and silly stuff - it should likely ease off on its own without being forced.
Understood. Thanks for replying.
Is there some way to promote the RP section, not really advertise, but just increase awareness?
I still just don't think there's any issue leaving things the way they are. OR is right, we really just need to promote more activity outside of spam, and lay off the spammy comments/chat in non-spam forum areas (something that has never been a TFF strongsuit). Let's face it, 90% of us are returning members that just spent 5-10 years being pretty absent. You take away spam post counts/try to limit actual spam section stuff you're going to lose everyone again lol.
That being said, maybe we could all make an effort to post more in other areas and be more involved in the forum in general. I do a really bad job at that but lately life has been pretty hectic for me so I've had no focus to make real effort to post in the forums.
I like the whole book club thing, but I don't have much time to read. I was thinking making we could have a TFF movie club too? I dunno. We're all so creative, let's put our creativity into getting the forum back to being a forum and not just a spam-haven... leave the spam where it belongs, but don't change it. IMO that's the best move.. but it's just an opinion!
I vote for a reincarnation of the short story contest. There doesn't even really need to be a prize, bit now we seem to be getting a lot more writers in, and I feel like over time we could definitely expand on it to where there is some sort of silly prize for winning or something.
Prize could just be putting "short story winner contest" in your TFF banner?
"Short story contest winner - May 2018"
Could do it on a monthly basis.
Yes we definitely could. Whoever runs it could do like themes for the stories etc too. We could even take turns running it.. Or maybe previous months winner gets to pick the theme for the next month, as an additional prize?
If nobody else wanted to, I'd be more than happy to head it.
Spitballing here, but what are your thoughts on a fantasy Internet scavenger hunt? For example I could give a scenario such as "tomorrow I am cosplaying as Gimli, I have 85 dollars left in my budget but just broke my weapon. Find me a new one in my budget" and the first person wins? I've not put any thought into the idea so there could be a plethora of flaws.
Hatter if you want it the job is yours!
Bringing back the short story writing would be great - in another fantasy site that has a stronger lean toward publishing they even have things like a 75 word story competition. So you could run a couple at different word limits to suit different time periods and writers and time.
I think the internet hunt idea is possibly a little spammy to be honest, plus it would result in a lot of off-site activity around the net rather than having users here on site.
Liv - You can take part in the first reading club; I've purposefully chosen short stories . Considering how many parents we have we could even mix something in like Narnia in time (read aloud to your kids ^^).
Right on. I'll brainstorm and get something up over the weekend!
I’m so excited for the short story contest. That’s a great idea! Can’t wait to see what you come up with, Hatter.
Woo, let's just hope that there's enough interest. That's sadly what befell the previous ss contest. I think I was the only one who was up to write lol. Excited to see what you come up with Hatter
The writing contest is now open
Okay, I'll have to check it out then!
Well, this may just be me but I find that I tend to post far more if I have a mobile app I can use instead of logging in and using a browser. This is probably uncommon.
And hello. E-Z here.
