There is an account of the early celts using swords against leather armor when they had chainmaille. When their enemies adopted chainmaille they came back with heavier swords similar to hand-and-a-half swords. They had half plate at this time. They always seemed to be one step ahead of their enemies. I think this was in the article by National Geographic in the 70's.
I am not sure how accurate this artical was as newer research always seems to change what the first guy thought.

A polearm like a spear, halberd, partizan, axe, is of course no weapon to be trifled with.

Staffs may be quick and a jab at an unprotected face may be devestating... but I would so much rather go up against someone with only a blunt force instrument than a razor sharp blade... if someone had enough padding under their armor they might not even feel a strike from a staff.

There is also something else no one is taking into consideration. Time period and location. No one is going to have a katana at the battle of Hatsings. No one at Towton is going to have a machete. No one at Culloden will have two short swords. The most dependable weapon I can think of is a battle axe, much like the one I have in my collection. Large, very hefty, a muchfarther reach than any of my swords... an axe like that, if it doesn't kill someone, will make sure they don't get back up.

The main problem when going against staff-wielders isn't the amount of damage they can do (although that's quite formidable, too) - the problem is that, even if they've managed to slip past the point of the weapon, it is extremely difficult for a swordsman to get in range to hit the staff-man without being pummeled to the ground by the butt of the staff or receiving other similar nastiness.

No amount of padding is going to save your neck from breaking under a strike to the head, for example, or your knees from shattering - and those targets are a mainstay of at least English staff-play.

In any case, they'd feel a sword-blow even less.

i think a few of you guys here have got a clue and a bunch that have watched to many movies. First off set some parameters, are we talking one on one in the open?, in the midst of a huge battle defending a rampart?, modern?, ancient?, all around best weapon?, your armor?, their armor? only use a weapon from the era your fighting in? or can u bring it from anywhere? what style? chinese? eurpopean?

If we throw aside all of the logicalities (like that i just made up a new word) and real worldness of it, give me a kwando or a pair of short swords not so european style though, something more curved though.

h20, what's your background with weapons and fighting? Are you a collector, a martial artist, a re-enactor?

I think a double barreled sawn off shotgun would go well with that warhammer of mine.

Original Post - "let's say its the Dark Ages...and you're fighting for the king...but with what weapon?"

Please stay on topic. No gun talk in this thread. We're talking blades and bows/crossbows etc, not gunpowder.

I would use a katana or maybe a scimitar because In my perspective speed is your best weapon and with a sword that can be used swiftly you will be the victor.

why is it that almost everyone equates katanas or scimitars with being fast?

Because they can be...CAN being the key word there.

I'm almost positive that it was posted before by someone, a long sword, claymore, polearm, whatever you want can be just as fast as a katana and a scimitar. You just have to work at it.

any sword wil be as fast anyother as long they have similar weights. Considering katana tend to weigh between 3 and 3.5 pounds and scimtars/sabres tend to be between 1.5 and 2 pounds while longswords are from 2.5 to 4 pounds. It doesnt make much snes to conder a katana inhereently faster than anyother sword.
