personally, i only have 2 choices...a ninja sword, or 2 macheties...all the rest of my collection is rat-tail tang...

let's say its the Dark Ages...and you're fighting for the king...but with what weapon?

spear, sword, bow, club, axe, crossbow, anything!

out of my 2 choices...i would have to say my macheties with a backstrap...even though they probably didn't have them back then

    let's hear your choices

Sword only, and maybe a sheild. Any of those other weapons and I'd just succeed in hurting myself. :D

Well definately a two-handed broadsword, and a nice long knife( maybe 2) for a backup weapon!

Broadsword and shield, along with a small axe as a backup weapon. The shield also has claw-like spikes in the front, so I could use it as a weapon too.

at least thats what i would pick if i were to fight right here and now...but if i had a choice...

start the battle out with a spear...might throw it or fight with it for a while, depending on the situation
a bow and a few arrows, now all that much, just to keep there just in case
    a bastard sword
    hunting knife
and maybe 2 knives on the back, kinnda like Lego carries as a backup
    some light armor
    bracers

if they fail me...ill throw my armor...if that fails me...ill run...and ill run fast

Dude, I am gonna go with an elven warrior sword, ya I know that they weren't in the dark ages but that thing rocks. I would want a bow to fire a few volleys into the line closest to me, and then I would want two knives similar to Legolas. I would have on at each side.

ya...but i would waddle like the wind

i dont think thats all that much weight...
a spear that could be thrown, which i will probably lose within the first few mins of battle
bastard sword...not a long one, only about 30"...i like to have force behind my blows
    hunting knife is nothing
bow and arrows might have some weight
the 2 knives are practicially nothing
light armor...sorry, i should have specified...i meant leather armor
    bracers, not that much

ah well...if i die in battle, at least i wont have to live through Kinslayer saying he's right

    lol jk

    have one on me :draught:

Two short swords, one in each hand.

Well, I change mine, Bow, quiver full of arrows, two knives(like Legolas'), and a scimitar, that is if mounted, if not, all that I would change is the scimitar to a roman sword and a shield.

    actually...i change mine too

instead of starting out the battle with a spear...forget it
i couldnt throw it well, only fight with it...and that is hard when you are in tight spaces...

so ill go in with a bow with the rest of the archers, wait till my quiver's out, and charge with the same armory that i posted above

A lot of responses have been cute. Cute, but not practical. As far as knives and machetes go, don't forget you're fighting against armor here. "Ninja" swords and katanas have never been awesome armor defeaters (seeing as how a lot of Japanese armor was made of wood) and I have a feeling many of you would have met a quick and PAINFUL death :/

In a heated battle, I would definitely choose a sword like this. http://www.albionarmorers.com/swords/deltin/dt5143.htm

I own this sword. Such big Great Swords have been known to crush plate and pierce chain mail, and would be useful for keeping enemies at a distance. Heavy enough to crush and sever bones, but not to heavy to weigh you down as it weighs less than 4 pounds. A backup shortsword and shield would be helpful, but this is the weapon I would use to swing in wide arcs to keep enemies back.

Sword and shield all the way baby. My complete kit would comprise a bow and arrows for distance, with sword and shield for all my fighting needs. Plus a nice hefty dagger on the belt for emergencies, but if you're getting down to your dagger you're in trouble!

I will stick with what I have, A sword that is based on the elven warrior, but with changes, I would shorten it to 45" instead fifty by taking the handle down five inches.
Then as a back-up,two knives similar to legolas, but with changes as well, and these are my combat weapons, I would use a bow before hand. If mounted I would go with a lage scimitar style sword similar to Haldirs, but with changes, it would be more like a Bagua. And I wouldn't want or need a shield seeing as how my sword is two handed.
But as far as armour goes, just give the last alliance elven armour, the chain mail, the breastplate cuirras, the pauldrons and vambracers, even the helmet, I think the way this stuff was put together would be nearly impenitratable. Although one thing does bother about the elven breast plate and cuirras, they are connected by leather straps which could easily be sevverd and there seems to be a big gap right acrosss the stomach in between the breastplate and the cuirras, which is covered up bt the sash. Would'nt that be kinda stupid to leave your lower abdomin wide open with nothing there but chainmail?

I would most likey go into battle on horseback, armed with a long spear and my Albion Next Generation "Norman" european arming sword. The lance would have a shaft of wood, and a long, pointed, leaf-shaped blade (1 1/2 feet long)

For armour, I would be wearing my Conical spangenhelm w/nasal, along with a chain maille hauberk, integrated coif, and a gambeson underneath (long with a shirt and tunic inder that!) Basically, not too much armour, but not too little.

On my horse, I would have a small, viking-like axe attached to the saddle.

If I was to charge into battle, I would be carrying a teardrop style shield (like the ones used by the Normans, as shown on the Bayeux tapestry). This shield would be used in battle on foot, but if a throwing spear were to hit it (think pilum) then it wuld be discarded.
