I wish that you were closer... We have a weekly Poi practice at my house. It's a really cheep hobby - all that you need is the internet, a $35 set of Poi, some lighter fluid, and a coif to protect your hair.

Pay some money? You can look at the videos on the website for free. The website does offer videos and poi for sale but you don't have to buy them (I didn't). You can even make your own practice poi at home from bits of chain, tennis balls, and a little leather. There are many free training videos on the site too.

You can buy poi that you can light up for about 35-40 bucks anywhere on the internet. If you are new and a bit creative you can make a practice set (that you don't light up) at home for much less so that you can practice the moves and see if it's for you first. Tennis balls, and cheap stuff from Home Depot can make you a decent practice set if you spend a little time and a small amount of change.

I perform poi on fire and only spend about $25/6 months on my equipment (minus lighter fluid).

It's a really cheap hobby, I've never purchased a video or paid for training in any way.

I bet if you showed some serious interest and worked with a not on fire practice set for some time, your parents would probably support your efforts. Most people who practice poi don't light up all the time and most practice for some time before lighting up. I practice 4 nights a week not on fire and only one night a week on fire and I am at the level where I am getting a street perfomers license so that I can make some money off of it in Ybor.

The health benefits of practicing poi are great, it's a fantastic upper body work out. *pinches my muscles* Working out to techno is a sheetload of fun and good for you too.

It's also a healthy activity for teens/young adults in that it takes practice and effort, the fire is fun and it's cool when people appreciate that, but the majority of poi training is hard work.

I know exactly what you mean. I perform for my friends and at SCA events just for the fun of it all the time. In fact, the only reason that I am getting a license is because I am street performing anyway, the license only allows me to put a hat out and collect a little money for it. I live in a nightclub district, so when I practice in front of my house, a lot of people see it and stop by just to hang out so I figured, why not get the license and put the collection hat out.

I've met some great people through my freebee street practices.
