Now I am talking about the Hanibal(sp?) that road from Carthage to try and find Rome. The thing that was special about his army was that they road on elephants which many of the people of the Roman empire had never seen before.

Now my question is "did tolkien base the oliphaunts from Hanibal's army." It seams a lot like he did so. The elephants seamed massive to people and were never seen before, and the fact that they came out of the South seams to be another similarity.

Anyway i want to know what your thoughts are on this.

Interesting. Never thought about a Hannibal connection before. Perhaps it was unintentional, but then again maybe not....

I would safely say its up to speculation. He most likely knew of the story, but whether or not he purposely encompased this would be hard to tell.
