    My feelings exactly!! She loves to explain things way after they happen and has a reason for everything, hopefully this is no different and we will find out why in books 6 or 7.

    I don't know whether it was important to kill Sirius off, but if you haven't noticed, as he gets older, Harry goes through more and more depressing situations. I think Rowling does all this dark stuff to symbolize Harry leaving the rosy, happy world of a child, and growing into a man.
