We've all heard of the elves and their sailing into the west, but what does Valinor look like exactly? Is it a tropical paradise where elves lounge on the shores all day? A secluded island with tall trees where the elves live out the rest of their immortal lives in peace? What does it look like???? I've always wanted to know.

I think its said Lothlorien was made in like mind of Valinor. So I would suppose one could imagine it was similiar, and use it as a starting point.

I suppose so. I haven't read too many books of Tolkien's besides FOTR, TTT, and I just started The Silmarillion. Hopefully in the Silmarillion they go into more detail about the whole appearance thing.

I don't think there are any actual descriptions, but when you're reading, you get a general picture of how it looks. I can see it in my mind's eye, but I can't describe to someone else how I think it looks.

Agreed. Tolkien usually leaves things open to the readers interpetation, and IMO is one of his best writing techniques.

That's also true. It's just with Tolkien's work I've noticed that he doesn't like to use intense detail. He lets you see things for yourself. That can be good because then Valinor becomes what you want it to be. But at the same time I'd like to know how he thought it would look like.

It is a fact though, that Turgon built Gondolin as a resemblance of Tirion upon Tuna. so if you collect some info over Gondolin(book of lost tales II and unfinished stories needed) you would probably come up with a good idea of what valinorean cities must look like.;)

In the Silmarrilion I describes it in a general way, here is the stuff I can remember:
Tall mountans guard the borders from attack with only one break in it to allow the stars to shine through. There is a tall mountain called Tanequtil where Manwe and Varda hang out. At the foot of Tanequtil is a city on a hill called Tuna. The Alequanda live in a city at the shore line. There is a hill with the two dead trees still on it. Away west the halls of Mandos and Lorien are. And when Earendil comes it says the dust is like small diamonds.

There is a Map of Valinor in the Atlas of Middle Earth. I'll post a pic of that in a while.
