It was an easy guess, I only know 2 places where there is a huge amount of haida art: british columbia, and the civilisations museum at hull, just in front of the quebec-ontario frontiere.

you can't say I don't know my country well! :D

    here's da canvas!

sorry for the horrible, horrible pictures, they don't do it justice.

Also, I have joined three pictures, so you can see the raven and the sun more detailed, and then the full canvas(missing a part of the raven... crappy webcam... couldn't go far enough...)

    ^Yay! Another BC resident :)

TMFN that is awesome work man....both aspects of the painting are wicked but I would have to say that the Raven really caught my attention...are you sure these are only your first couple of attempts at Haida cause you're a natural IMHO...

That is a regular canvas right?? It isn't stretched?? That is even cooler if it is cause I can only paint on stretched canvases...I can't make anything look as good as that on a regular!

    thank you senekha & drag9!
hehe, I must say without being immodest that i'm quite proud of it, and yes, it's only my second attempt at haida. but before doing it, I studied the basics of this technique a few weeks! so with the basics understood, it's easier.

    yes, it's regular canvas.

in fact, it's an unprimed cotton painter's tarp... I buy it for about ten bucks the 10' by 5' piece at home depot, a lot more cheaper than artist's canvases.

my newest painting (done t'day! :D) named "i tequila !"

I love canvas board... it takes paint better than regular stretched canvas, and it's cheaper!

*sigh* nothing is free, today... wat do you want...

a very kitsch indian head for my very kitschy aunt....

btw, I found a great discount store which sells small stretched canvases (9''x7'') for 1$... it makes painting much more affordable!

The "i tequila" painting is awesome...the title says a lot about the piece...lol...the kitsch indian is really good too...the feathers and beads are very well done :)

I've been buying my canvases both stretch and board from "the art store" for stupid prices...and I found the other day the canvas board at the dollar store for a buck...man have I ever been ripped off...cause I have bought the canvas boards (9" x 7") for $5.99 (doesn't seem like much but after awhile it adds up)...Still haven't found a cheaper place for the stretched ones...and if you make the stretched ones yourself (buy the frame and then the canvas) it is usually more expensive...bah humbug :)

I'm participating in a snow sculpting event... in which I'll sculpt (you guessed it) haida! I don't know if I'll have pics, but if I do, be sure I'll send them... It'll represent a snowy owl hiding behind a huge haida mask. the block of packed snow measures 6' by 4', so it'll be quite a big sculpture. TAKE OUT THE AXES, MY FRIENDS!

Damn straight Art supplies are a rip off :D

Are you kidding a snow sculpting event??? Sounds like fun...is it a contest to see whose is the best or is it just for fun??? Try and get pictures I would like to see that!! Are axes the only tools you'll be using??

no, axes won't be the only tools... I'll use a machete knife, scrapers, saws, hammers, ice picks, things like that... it's really a contest; first place wins 250$, 2nd place 200 or 150$ and 3rd place 100$.

we worked from 8am to 4:30pm. of course, we stoped an hour or two to eat, so you can say it took us at least 6 hours (us because we were 3 in our team)
