So are you going in to bat for the bible or modern morality??

Heres some words from Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America from a speech in the US Senate on Feb 14th 1850

"[Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God...it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation...it has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts."

    That should spurn someone on....

@Sparrow: What I meant about the job is not that it tires the brain, but that it takes up his time, and therefore he can't be on TFF at all times.

Wow, I go away for 6 weeks and come back to mayham! Well, the bible is definitely subject to interpretation, it was also written in a time by people who had different customs and beliefs in those years. It seems to me that when people have a practice that may be considered somewhat inhumane they find a way to use God as scapegoat so as to condone what they do. Essentially God becomes what you want him to be or what you need him to be.

If God's word is timeless than his morality is timeless.
Owning another human being was never moral, it was acceptable in another time and place, but it was never moral. The sane person understands that the Bible is no more than the words and teachings of old men from a distant time and culture. There was no God involved.

And the very sad truth is that Jefferson Davis was right.
The Holy Bible does indeed sanction institutional slavery, as it does beating one's children to death, or having multiple wives, or using women as sexual objects, and committing genocide... the list goes on.

Parts of those are not true, seeing as the 10 commandments are supposed to be very important rules, and they condemn violence, killing, adultery, ...

None of the Ten Commandments condemn violence; one of the commandments condemns the act of Murder, which is not the same thing as condemning violence. Most of the commandments have to do with God himself... one God, no idols, remember the sabbath, etc.

btw... at the time, breaking any one of the Ten Commandments was punishable by death.
    Not exactly nonviolent.

Interpreting the Bible literally is a bad thing to do. That is what can bring on religious activism.
Don't take the Bible word for word!

You can believe in God and his word as long as you know how to properly read the Bible. My protestant religion teacher said that she believed in none of the miracles, because to her it means that Jesus did something that is as good and special as walking on water/turning water to wine/... That nothing should be taken literally.

But, surely even atheists believe in something? Surely, you cannot live your life from day to day without believing in anything... even science is a belief, or believing in oneself. Or do I have the wrong idea here?
If you read the Bible in a literal way, you're sure to come away with a pretty screwed up mind set... especially once you get to revelations.

For the vast majority science is a belief - they don't understand it, but they do trust in and believe in it. However science has the bonus that you can clearly see a plane flying or a bridge stand. Furthermore most developed nations have open access to learning and study resources so one can, with work, aim to understand science a little better.

Though, as oft the case, each time you learn something in science you find there are another 10 things you don't know and need to learn - and at some point you hit the limit of what we understand - all the rest is belief ;) (and lots of squiggle pretty patterns of numbers on blackboards)

Though we can see the bridges, planes... we cannot see the Big Bang. And though it has been proved to have existed, and they probably know what initiated it, however not everything that can be proved by science is true. The in existence of God cannot therefore be proved, yet His existence neither.
This obviously just labelled me as Agnostic/Imperialistic.
