I don't think Ricky Gervais is overrated, not at all. But yeah I do think the show Blackadder is better than the office. (Better than any American comedy show for sure lol) Sorry but I don't like American comedy shows. The humour is too obvious, often corny, typical... British humour is more subtle, intelligent, a lot less obvious with not always a laughter track to tell the watcher's "here's the joke, you should laugh now!) I'm not sure if the American version has a laughter track, but anyway. You'll never see a scene that hilarous in it like I saw yesterday about the guy boasting his ego about being once a soldier and tries to boss people around. Just thought it was hilarous epspecially with double meanings as a line "So they discovered your camp." and "So you would use your hole as bait?", "Yes if I knew they were coming." Subtle but just genious lol

You're stereotyping American comedy. They can use subtlety now. I enjoy American humour even when it's loud because it's different. Modern American comedy shows are generally better than British one's considering the British are turning out crap like Little Britain.

Eurgh, little britain, cant understand how anyone enjoys that, the same jokes in every episode......tom baker is the only thing good in it.

Spaced a good classic, never get better, and now the americans are trying to remake that too......

What I dont get it why? the cultural differences are minimal, we get all your shows original, I think its insulting to americans to think they can't enjoy the originals.

I also saw the american pilot for life on mars.......good god it was bad.

that said I do enjoy the american office, the two are unique and like met I think ricky gervais is overrated, he is funny, but theres better. And sometimes the more obvious jokes are just as entertaining.

Anyway some good show for americans to check out:

    Black Books,
    Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
    Peep Show
    Father Ted
    The Mighty Boosh

    etc.

I used to watch BBC in my free time when I was younger. I love 'British' humour because it's different than anything else. Monty Python for instance. I love Monty Python.

Nothing tops The Office though. It is my favourite show hands down. Scrubs is good as well, but the Office is just amazing. I hope to see the British version some day as well.

And yes, we can use subtleties 'now'.

I hvae faith in american comedy, but not in the american entertainment industry, the talent is there to do as well and surpass british comedy, its just not nurtured.

Most American shows are stereotype. I'm not going to generalize, but imo most are. Not saying there's no funny American comedy show at all. I just prefer British humour. Depends on what kind of humour a person has, I guess. Ricky Gervais is good, but he's not the best comedian around, I agree on that. A comedian like Billy Connolly certainly tops him.

Um.... South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama, THE COLBERT REPORT........ You dont think these shows are "daring"? And besides, I think its pretty daring in the American Office for Steve Carrells role. You just have to watch it to understand lol.

I don't know about the last one you mentionned, but I would only call South Park really daring. And yeah most (Don't know the last one) you mentionned are animated which dims it down. But if you look at live-action, I've not seen any that equals the daring humour in British tv shows and show a lot here. Mostly garbage imo. Fresh Prince of Belair. Friends, Joey, Will and Grace, Sex and the City. Third Rock from the Sun. The 70's show. My wife and kids. I could go on and on. But it mostly that stuff which has that predictable humour with a stupid laughing track added to give you a sign 'that was suppose to be a joke, folks!' lol

I didn't say I didn't like it, I just said that the humour isn't daring. Just used a few comedies as an example.

But that's not the point of those comedies now is it? It depends on what type of humour and subject the comedy focuses on. Not all comedies can be "daring". It doesn't make them any less funny.

Like I said, depends on what humour you have. I love the more subtle sarcastic humour, rather than the obvious...

Humour is humour. If it makes you laugh, what's the difference? Either way you're enjoying yourself.

Not every humour is the same. Humour like in Fresh Prince doesn't make me laugh as highly as something like the office or a stand-up show of Billy Connolly.

So true... he's perfect for the Office, but plays pretty much the same type of character in all his films. Except maybe "Dan in Real Life," where he toned it down a bit. Did anyone else see that one?

I thought it was really good, AND Steve Carrell's performance was amazing... and different than his usual roll.
