In the book "Hobbit" is written:

This won't do at all!’ said Thorin. ‘If we don't get blown off, or drowned, or struck by lightning, we shall be picked up by some giant and kicked sky-high for a football.’

so, it can be supposed that the football game was known in the Middle-Earth, even when Bilbo Baggins was young and travelled with the dwarves.

can we guess how popular was this game, what race played it better, and did any games between Mordor team and Gondor team take place?

I imagine ballgames were the sole preserve of children, and not a game with a formal set of rules and teams. The idea of orcs and elves playing each other in a Middle-earth Cup is amusing, though.:)
