Balrogs were cool, but let's not forget about the dragons.

Ent's aren't "monsters" (IMO) but for my choice, I guess I would have to conform and go with the Balrog. You just don't get kooler than that. = D

I don't think that the uruks (or any of the other orcs) can be cathegorised as monsters. I mean they have a society, a culture, a civilisation (however bloodthirsty and barbaric it may seem). Shelob, the dragons, the thing from the pond outside Moria's gates, the balrogs, thoses are monsters.
I personally like balrogs :balrog: , they have a Diablo thing going on (at least in the movies)

Well I liked Smaug, you have to admit, he has more personality than some fat spider who just wants to eat.

He is definetly cooler than any orc, and a dragon is more powerful than a Balrog if we are to go by the Silmarilean.

And hey, Smog had magic that made people do funny things, GO SMAUG YOU ROCK!

as a not so big LOTR fan (but knows all monsters...I think lol) I think the Balrog is the best. I love fire so a fire demon like the Balrog was the coolest to see in FOTR. I have a painting (a copy) of it. It showed the Balrog not only with a whip but also with a sword So if people still see me as a lotr hater...why would I collect things of LOTR...If you want to see the swords I collected of LOTR...be my guest;)

I always found the barrow wights to be more sinister than the balrog or fell beasts.

I always lked Grond. Used in a great way, tremendously powerful and a tentative connection to Morgoth's hammer.

Besides that, The Mouth of Sauron and the sleeping Dead in the Dead Marshes

Hmm. For me it's a toss up between giant spiders and balrogs.
