Has anyone ever noticed that weapons and armor in big movies like Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia typically have a very cool appearance that you just don't find in the historical stuff? It's almost as if the metal itself has a unique luster.

Obviously the movie designs are more artistic and less practical, but still, that can't be the only reason they look so cool. Perhaps its a matter of lighting and camera work. In the movie 300, the red capes were designed carefully to appear a specific way when filmed. Maybe the same can be done with metals.

Keep in mind that a lot of the stuff in movies isn't metal due to cost and time factors. It's resin or plastic or rubber, made to look like metal.

If you've seen the LOTR extended edition special features DVDs, it gives a great run through on the colour changes they add to movies. It can done by lens filters to accentuate or dull colours, or done in post production on computers.

Historical stuff can look just as cool in terms of lighting, if you light it correctly :)

I've seen some armour in the SCA that looks pretty darn cool :) Especially those knights lucky enough to have full plate armour...I've seen guys that look like they just stepped out of a movie.

Don't compare it to 300 too, that entire film was done infront of a bluescreen with heavy digital effects.

But anyways, Mububban is right, resin & camera filters.
