Just because he's done alot for the genre dosen't straight away mean that what he has written is brilliant, he writes what he writes. I think its because of his easy to read, not incredibly detailed writing style that he has managed to go places.

People who want a quick and easy to read fantasy series (not saying any of his writing has a lack of depth content wise) have no trouble with them and enjoy them.

Maybe my analogy to Eragon was a little poor thought out though. He is definitely a better writer than Palonski is at the moment. Saying that it dosen't take alot.

@roland: paolini isnt as experienced in writing as brooks... and it shows in the quality of the writing, so to put them on the same level may just show how much you know about writing... :)

i actually cant see how you can say his writing isnt detailed... the books would not be good and bestselling if he wasnt able to paint a picture in the readers mind... so that proves there is enough detail and he is not boring us with too much! :)

I've been a reader and fan of Terry Brooks' Shannara books for many years now and, on the whole, have found them to be creative, interesting, and well written (w/the exception of Sword which was a blatant imitation of TLOR). However, I do think I understand the poster who said that whats missing from Brooks' books sometimes is depth...He develops characters, story lines, and situationsto a certain degree, and then that's it, when more details and depth is what the reader wants (in my case). His books seem too predictable as another poster related, especially the first six or seven of them. I get the feeling he is targeting teens and young adults only with his stories, and as a middle aged dude, I find less and less to latch onto with his books. I'll still read the rest of his Shannara books, and probably enjoy them most likely more than most other fantasy - I just like the whole concept of Shannara and the peoples that dwell within too much to stop reading them...

The Shannara series are the best, I just can't get enough of them. I've just started the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, twenty pages in and can't put it down already.

I just got the opporunity to try Terry Brooks, and I must say I was VERY disappointed. I'd heard so many good things about his Shannara series, but I thought it was fair at best.

Brooks is great. His Shannara series is by far a wonderful series. I particularly think he shines his best in his Word and Void Trilogy.

Landover sucked. It did. It's the only one I've read, and I have no faith in Brooks now.

I liked Landover but the Shannara series is completely different and about a million times better. You should give that series a go CP!
