I wonder if any replicas will come out of the movie 'Troy' ...

In case you haven't heard of it... do a search on the internet! ;) But seriously, it is Wolfgang Petersen film about the Trojan War. Stars Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, Sean Bean (Yay!), Peter O'Toole, etc, etc...

Obviously this is an opportunity for some new replicas to hit the market...

I moved this to historical weapons forum, I think it will be more apropriate here, I may be wrong though.

I always thought greek swords were to small, it will be intersting to see them used in the movie...

it'll be interesting to see the Gladius' used in the movie.. greek swords are very small usually, but very effictive hacking weapon. It doesnt have a long reach, but the short length makes them lighter, quicker, and more manuverable in tight quarters.

greek swords were not generally hacking swords. Like the Gladius they were used for quick jabbs and easy stabbing, they were very manuverable from behind a shield because you could hide behind your shield and when the enemy came to hit you you could just parry with your shield and give him a quick stab in the neck, gut or grion :dmonkey:

Yeah, I wasn't sure where to put this topic. On one hand, the story is 'history' and the swords featured will have historical roots. On the other, they will likely have some fantasy stylings to pep them up a bit.

From the trailers, it looks like Achilles has a nice shortsword with a very distinct tip. If you watch the latest trailer from movies.yahoo.com you can see what I believe is its handle over his shoulder when he says "be careful king of kings, first you need victory" and the point of it when he says "immortality... take it, it's yours!"

Anyway. Should be cool. I wonder who would make the replicas...

Actually, one of the main reasons their swords were made short were to get more footsoldiers to fight more closely together. A sword with a 3-4 foot reach has the advantage, but that means his comrads have to be farther from him. Using a sword that has a 1 1/2 or 2 foot blade, means that you could have more of your fellow soldiers closer to you and win by overwhelming your enemy.

Northfire, you rule. ;) Anyone who keeps up on Samson's stuff shows he is of great taste.

The Samson piece is awesome... he is truly a smith of the highest caliber. But, I do not think this is the sword featured in Troy. Here's why...

"The inscription is a quote Jody found at the beginning of Richard Francis Burton's The Book of the Sword and is attributed to Lod. della Vernaccia, A.D. 1200."

The quote is latin, and is circa 1200 AD. "Troy" takes place far, far before that. Also, after talking with their customer service at Albion, it seems that the sword design is not yet approved, hence they are not actually making the "limited edition" of it yet... but "Troy" the movie is already in post-production.

I could always be wrong, however. The Samson site says it is for a "major fantasy film." Hmmm.

    Hey everyone, wazzup?

The Troy movie finally has a weapon as an "official" replica. In the Noble Collection's last catalogue they came out with The Sword of Achilles.

    http://www.noblecollection.com/catalog/product.cfm?id=NN4760&catid=10

Although I must warn you all, that WHOLE movie was extreme trash. For any unfamiliar with the Era of the Trojan War, which was approximately 1200 BC, and occured during the Last Citadel Age of Mycenaean Greece, this movie was terrible for a depiction of the era's weapons, warfare, and armor!

For information on actual swords and armor of the period, visit sword forum international's Ancient Weapons or Ancient Armor discussion forums, where plenty of threads on the Bronze Age spring up, and there's a whole thread (in the weapons forum) dedicated to the Troy movie and it's inaccuracies, and rare accuracies as well...

Or, check out Matthew Amt's Bronze Age page... Or mine, which is just goin' up, and won't have photos for about a week.

I've bought the sword, thanks for giving me a link to the real replica. I found a sword once on ebay from the movie itself. but it looked like crap cause yeah these stuntswords are made of rubber, so I didn't buy it.

Did you buy the Noble Collection sword? Can you tell us a little about it? I have heard that Noble Collection's LOTR line of weapons isn't that great, but what about Troy?

I ordered it, I didn't get it yet, They said I would get in the beginning of Januari. So can't say if the quality is good or not. I have an anduril here from very good quality. I'll compare it to that when it arrives.

I've bought it from this site. It's the same I guess cause the other site didn't ship to Europe.http://www.weaponmasters.com/?ID=49...41&ITEM=WM-4325

I received the sword of Achilles today. I must say that it looks really cool! pretty heavy too. It has a cool bronze colour. I really like the style. The plaque however isn't wood, but plastic and has no drawing, which dissapoints me a little, there are no parts, no describition to hang the sword up on the wall. It has two triangle wheels to hang the sword up with nails. I'll make some pictures later. And if you have questions, please do...
