Now a lot of new members come onto the forum, and a lot of them make the same thread asking "Can you suggest any good fantasy titles" or something similar.

I thought maybe it would be a good idea if one of the mods or admins made a sticky thread in one of the book sections with a list of all book titles that have already been recommended around the board.

Just thought it would be useful to direct all newcomers to that thread instead of having to post a whole bunch all over again :D

Maybe, but at the same time they seem to ignore about the stickies about forum rules and using the search button.... ;)

Probably because it seems too much like hard work . I think Met's suggestion would work though - it's hard to blatantly ignore a sticky in the books section saying RECOMMENDED FANTASY BOOKS as obviously as possible. And half the threads in that section are probably that sort of thing, it does get annoying.

How would you do it? Have one stickied thread? It'd get huge like the 'Currently Reading' thread with lots of posts just saying things like 'aSoIaF Rocks!'.

You'd have to have someone in charge of updating the first post with the recommendations and their weightings and I don't think the Admins or Mods are gonna be queueing up for that job.

Another way would be to have a section on everyone's profiles for recommendations, but I don't know if that's possible. Plus it'd be much more work in all likelihood.

Or everyone could just list them in their sigs, but we'd still get posts requesting.

I think the best option would be the sticky but you'd need a volunteer to run it. I'd be game if no one else wanted it.

Pm a mod with a list? And if someone tells a mod of any they have missed they can update the sticky.

That depends on how useful the mod is feeling

    *Ducks*

I think recommended authors would probably be better, we tend to read everything a certain author's written. Maybe recommended series.

    Something like:
    aSoIaF: 42 recommendations

    WoT: 38 recommendations

    Terry Pratchett: 15,298,437 recommendations

And then a post outlining each further down the thread.

I'm guessing 15,298,436 of those would come from you? ;)

Undoubtedly :)rolleyes:) but I'd still have to wonder about 15 million plus votes when there's about 5000 people on the forum. And the likely culprit is pretty obvious :p.

Besides, it's not like I suggested you're the only one who likes Prachett. I left a vote for CP to make it fair.

That usually depends on if we remember we don't get paid for this.

It would do nothing to stop the problem of dozens of posts asking for recommendations. That list doesn't say who's good or bad.

We could have a poll but it'd be massive.
