I have had a lot of debate lately with friends, co-workers, and such over wich is better Star Wars or Star Trek. Just wondering what everyones opinion here is.

Personaly I like Star Wars better. I know we are all shocked. I just find the mix of fantasy and scifi. Also I have always wanted to be a Jedi (or Sith. Really I just want to have a lightsaber.)

Hopefully I can add better arguments as the debate goes on.

here we go again lol, star wars. Star Wars is a lot deeper, makes a lot more sense and applies more to me since star wars is fantasy and star trek is science fiction. And I'm more a fantasy fan than a science fiction fan. However some don't understand how star wars falls under the category fantasy just because they see space ships and blasters in the movies. They can't see besides that.

The argument I here most often is that Star Trek has better science behind it. Secondly that the Star Trek universe is larger and the story deeper. The second argument is usually presented by those who don't know about EU.

I know about EU, but even besides EU I think star wars is a lot more epic, has a storyline that does not go from movie to movie, but stays strong as one detailed story that follow the life of Anakin Skywalker and his children.

    Both have long histories
    masses of officail, canon stuff
as well as masses of fan material
and productions (books) that are not canon

Star Wasr was born because of Star Trek's success - otherwise starwars might not have been made at all (or by the right company etc...)

Both have their weaknesses (for Star Trek is the recent series Enterprise and hte new film, which are breaking the deep and existing timelines in favour of making new series - for star wars its (the last 3 films))

Both are being over comercialised now - and this leads to more productes (films/series) of substandard writing

Both are also suffering from the sterio typing = for star trek this is exploring new worlds (seriously they should look at DS9 - the only original series to be made -because it broke all the rules!)

In the end I don't think one is "better" then the other - both are born of similar generations which leads to easy comparision

Personally I prefer Star Trek but like Star Wars too. I suppose it's the sheer volume of episodes & films that have been made (176 episodes for STNG alone for example) and that you get your favourite characters, see them developed and having lots of different 'adventures' of one kind or another. I grew up with a least one of the ST franchises being aired weekly (now daily) so I suppose I got attached that way too.

Everyone has got to respect the effort and ammount of quality episodes that star trek has been through for a hell lot of years now.

But starwars was considered the #1 sci fi epic of all time with star trek and alien running close behind it.

Both great shows but my opinion leads to star trek.

Star Wars of course. Star Trek is just too technical in later series, and I don't care for that crap at all. There's one or two films I don't mind of Star Trek but not enough for me to add to my collection lets say. Star Wars (the movies, ignore 99.9% of EU crap which in my eyes is NOT Star Wars) is based on classic myths, folklore, political history, poetry, art etc etc There's so much to it, just from a story point of view. From 6 films you don't just get 12 hours of fun action, which you do anyway, you get a lot more. Very rare that what is essentially kids films can contain so much in meaning.

I like Star Wars better mainly because of the idea of the "The Force", which by the way, many argue is the defining feature that makes Star Wars fantasy. But also because the books in Star Wars have continuity. They are one big storyline that has a beginning and a timeline. Star Trek books are all over the place with every story an independent work without regard for what has already been written or said.

I think if you want a story about a Sci-Fi crew and their adventures from place to place, episode to episode, you should watch Firefly, not Star Trek. I also think that if you want a story about epic Sci-Fi wars with a little fantasy added in, you should watch Star Wars. Quite frankly I respect Star Trek for getting people interested in Sci-Fi, but Star Wars is more entertaining. Also as a gamer I must confess, Star Wars has better games.

Star Wars has its moments but its guilty of so much hackery. That Jar-Jar Binks character filled me with rage, it was so terrible. And C3PO was so annoying too. I guess I was a kid when I saw Star Wars the first time because I never noticed that character being annoying before. Maybe that's what I get for being old.

The three original SW were great but the sequels (prequels) were terrible. Anakin was not a well done character in any way. His motivations for his actions weren't really apparent to me at all. His turning evil the way that he did was so odd. And predictable.

Of course, these movies were made for kids, not for me, so what am I complaining about?

The best Star Trek series was Voyager. It had some incredibly cheesy moments but at least the characters were pretty good. Characters are everything to me when it comes to watching movies.

Janeway was the best captain. So evil and devious. I just loved that about her.

I like Star Trek more than Star Wars. I love Star Wars for having Lightsabers and The Force and Jedi and Sith. Who wouldn't enjoy all that? But I like Star Trek for personal reasons. It's, to me, inspiring. Showing us what we can be in the future, It makes me think we can be better. So I like Star Trek for its Inspiration and Science, and I like Star Wars for its "sate my need for blood" Jedi and Sith and The Force.

There isn't much difference between the two on average, but show me one moment of Star Wars that compares to "The Devil in the Dark" or "City on the Edge of Forever" or "Darmok" or "The Survivors."

Star Wars was always fun. Star Trek was sometimes a lot more than fun.
