Does anyone have tricks they use to fall asleep, to shut their brains off? I swear every night its the same for me, the minute I lay down my brain goes into over drive thinking about all the things I need to do, and I get super reactive to the slightest noise... it takes me ages to fall asleep.

Something you should consider is buying one of those nature soundtracks... ocean waves gently washing ashore. Ocean waves generate naturally occurring alpha noise which relaxes the mind and body. Also consider buying a ceiling fan and turn it on to the slowest setting. Other practical things you can do; don't eat right before bed, but go ahead and drink a beer... have sex before falling asleep... if you don't have a significant other than masterbate. It works for Kakashi.

I used to have a horrible time getting off to sleep, and once asleep I'd rarely stay asleep for longer than four or five hours. Now, I'm usually dead to the world within ten minutes.

I got some advice today: No screens for at least an hour before bed. I'll try that :D

My suggestion is yeah, no screens right before bed. Try using a fan if you don't already. Listen to really relaxing music before bed.

    [this thread already exists]

Make sure to be relaxed before going to bed, maybe do something about your thoughts (meditate, write stuff down, have an imaginary conversation, ...) don't look at any screens, (read? not sure), have a warm drink but find the perfect temperature (sub 10 degrees works best for me), ...

Just about, and he doesn't really need to do that much moderating anyway (as far as we can see).

This might sound stupid, but whenever I want to sleep but I can't, I read. No novels, however, so nothing interesting, but usually stuff I have to read for my studies, utterly boring stuff that I usually can't read for longer than 2 minutes. I force myself to read these texts until I'm exhausted and that sometimes really helps me fall asleep. :D

I can usually sleep well when I've just eaten and my stomach is full of delicious food. However, the other two pieces of advice usually work very well for me.

Eating can work - you just have to eat lots and lots and lots and lots

which probably wouldn't work so well after a time

It's the same for me, even if I go to bed at 9 I cant fall asleep until 3-4, its like some sort of internal clock. It's usually easier to fall asleep when it's cool in the room, open a window or such. And reading some boring book like Firiath suggested. Try to think about other stuff even though its hard, I usually think of nonsense, happy nonsense, that makes you happy and relaxed. Or the classic, count sheep.. Never worked for me though.
