I'm relieved because this image is perfect as is. It really is.

And if you need any help with your figure drawing, feel free to hit me up. I'd be very happy to help, whether it's some advice or a little assistance with the figures themselves. :)

That's excellent!.. and no, don't go with a stained glass look.

Keep it expressionistic and loose, it works.

Forgot to mention this in my last post, but when it comes to painting leaves… have you read “Leaf by Niggle” by Tolkien? (great book by the way)

And as to painting characters, If it's possible to have multiple layers or something in Corel Painter, I would try and paint them in the same picture as the background: it's definitely the best way to get the right feel for them (pose, lighting, colours, …).

Painter works very much like Photoshop and it definitely does layers. Honestly I don't know what I'd do without them.

On one hand I think you're right but I find painting on the background extremely distracting. I've got the line drawing and basic colour blocking/ shading mostly done for the first character (a dead body....mwuhahahaha), but I had to draw it in a new file on a blank canvas. My plan is to paste it into the background image and then integrate it fully into that image by increasing the richness of the colour, adding the highlights and shadows from the light in the picture, spreading some leaves around it, etc.
Once I get the basic painting of that image done, I might post it for critique. I have trouble getting body proportions right on humanoid figures and I always worry that the hands and head are too small, legs too long, etc etc etc... :p

That's why I only draw very small humanoid forms :D

I'm sure you'll do better than you seem to think you can :)

OK, here's the basic painting/shading of the body before I drop it into the background and re-work it.

That's very good. He really does look like he's not alive any more!

I think the only thing I would change is the position of his upper left arm slightly. Hmmm... The perspective on it doesn't look quite right.

Other than that though, it works! :)

hmmm... now that you mention it Eph, I think you're right. It kinda looks like he's holding his hand up: "ummm, excuse me, but I'm dead here!" hahahahaha
Oops! I'm going to have to fix that....:D

Hee hee. Yup, that's exactly what it looks like. I felt almost sorry to have to point it out because the rest of it works terrifically. Is it going to be much of a pain to fix? :D

I'll let you know after I've had time to fix it :D
Honestly, I don't think it will be that bad though. After thinking about it, I think I need to change the angle of the arm a bit and show the hand less from the top and more from the side with the thumb in the foreground.

    Thanks Per. :)

You continue to surprise me with you artistic skills SJ! That's really great!

The right hand and arm is amazing, but the left arm does look slightly small and sticking up…

Well I guess all that telepathic inspiration from the other thread must have worked. Here's another character that's supposed to go into that forest scene:

I painted this one in Photoshop

Very nice work there, SJ. That beak looks particularly vicious, just as described in the novel! ;)

Is this a piece for Prophecy? (that is book 1, right?)

And you managed to make the gold look like gold, which is amazing! :D
