    Re: Smoking banned!

At the end of the day its still an issue of personal choice, smokers can smoke, but non smokers shouldnt have to put up with it. balancing those factors is the real issue in any context whether its public places or otherwise. and I dont see a good way of doing it that appeases both parties.

    Re: Smoking banned!

I don't really see why people are bothered about it being banned. In the end you're the one that decided to smoke in the first place, so you have to put up weith the laws that are enforced against it. I agree that non-smokers shouldn't have to put up with it, like in restaruants, the last thing I'd want (an I smoke lol) is to be sitting down eating a meal and have smoke blowing in my face and food. Imo its pretty disgusting.

    Re: Smoking banned!

Smoking is still going strong here. No bans for smoking in public places. My favorite restaurant, unfortunately, is full of smokers. Oddly enough, the only thing that separates the smoking and non-smoking section is a slightly elevated dining area...like one step higher...no wall..or anything. Most people tend to be courteous though, sadly you get the people who don't care and don't mind blowing the smoke at your table.

    Re: Smoking banned!

There's legislation right now that's going to ban smoking in all public places, and then one that allows smoking only in bars and cigar abars.

Cig butts in cans is strictly forbidden at my place. Chew spit is banned period. I had a brief stint with dipping, and it even grossed me out.

    Re: Smoking banned!

Yes, but the drinking thing is different. KRudd seems to have little knowledge to effectively run a country.

Very recently a law has been passed (coming into effect very soon if not already) that smoking with children under the age of 16 in a car is also prohibitied. I like this, for many reasons. Smoking in enclosed spaces with children around is just unhealthy. But, I also think that smoking whilst driving should be banned outright...most people don't know how to drive as is. Add a cigarrette in a hand as they try to do it and drivers beware!

Pack of smokes to cost $20 in Australia soon, hopefully:

    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25735485-1702,00.html

Radio news yesterday reported a survey of smokers found 60% support for higher prices, as it would be further incentive for many of them to quit.

Give it another 50-100 years and smoking tobacco products will hopefully be considered as stupid as deliberately inhaling asbestos or juggling uranium. Nobody will do it because it's just kinda dumb and it's bad for you.

    Re: Smoking banned!

Well...some people like that. I don't think we can take the choice away from people (I mean, I think bungee jumping is a ridiculous idea, yet they're hardly going to stop that) but I just think that it should be restricted so that non-smokers are able to enjoy a smoke-free life.

And smoking will never be outright banned. Never. Nor will it ever phase out. Many things rely on the revenue it brings.

    Re: Smoking banned!

I don't quite think this one is about the stink of it. Or limiting the movement of smokers.

It's not even about astma patiets - after all, should we be allowed to, say, take pets on a train? That would be the same issue.

I think it's about health. That smokers damage their own health is bad enough as it is. But, in packed, badly ventilated places, they will also impact the health of those who don't smoke, most notably, the employees, who don't have a choice. A smoke-free work space should be guaranteed, much like an asbestos-free working space should be. Visitors, on the whole, have a choice. Though, while we're on it, the money saved with not having them exposed to second-hand smoking is considerable at the least.
