The Sevenwaters trilogy by Juliet Marillier is excellent. I loved the series and the characters, and it seemed really alive. Set in Ireland/England, the first part of the trilogy, Daughter of the Forest, covers one of the famous myths - the story of the girl whose brothers were turned into swans. I really, really recommend this series. It's not on the scale of grand epic like GRRM's aSoIaF, but it's good.

Wonder if Sorcha got her name from this series? :)

Is this a kids book, Lady?

Cant say I have come across it .

But I think there is nothing better than discovering an author.

    omg... <3

    I totally did :D

And you're like one of the few people to know that without me telling em lol. I hope I can give you rep for that haha.

This is one of my favorite trilogies...I bought all of em. Love em with a passion lol.

I liked her strength of character, and how she was strong without being...like a warrior, yknow? I thought that was really neat :)

Nope, adult series, and... just read it. :p

It is, that's why I love this series, and after I spend my allowance to buy the aSoIaF artbook and A Feast for Crows, I'm buying the entire trilogy. :D I loved Sorcha, Bran and Liadan - definitely some of my favorite characters of all time.

Just a question - how's her name pronounced? Sorcha with the "ch" or Sor-ca, with the k sound?

Sor-a-ka, but most people who don't speak Gaelic can't hear the a in the middle :)

Lol - I've always wanted to study Gaelic, but I've never had time... maybe in college. ;)

I knew, that's what inspired me to start the thread - although in my haste, I should have checked here for it first.

Interestingly, I've seen a pronunciation guide which claims "Sorcha" is pronounced "sorrha" - without the "c" sound. I guess perhaps it depends on which dialect you are speaking.

Anyway - what a powerful series!

Definitely wonderful. On my list of top 5 series (ASoIaF being #1, of course. ;)) It's nice seeing other Sevenwaters fans though. :)

I remember I was still in Australia when I was reading "Daughter of the Forest" and I was catching the train home from work.

I got to the point where Red is telling the story at the end, blindfolded, and I just started crying so hard because it was such an emotional part. It was very embarassing.

I must say I think the first book was my favorite.

Me too. I have one of my favorite quotes...everywhere. lol.

"It matters not if you are here, or there, for I see you before me every moment. I see you in the light on the water, in the swaying of the young trees in the spring wind. I see you in the shadows of the great oaks, I hear your voice in the cry of the owl at night. You are the blood in my veins, and the beating of my heart. You are my first waking thought, and my last sigh before sleeping. You are bone of my bone, and breath of my breath"

w00t! Another convert is about to be born. :D

@ Arya: Yeah, I think I cried reading Sevenwaters more than I did even reading ASoIaF. I liked the first two books a lot - I couldn't sympathize enough with Fainne to enjoy Child of the Prophecy as much.

The part I cried hardest was when Sorcha died.

@ Sorcha: That quote is wonderful. :) Bran's a darker, almost Gothic hero... but Red just rocks. :)

I read this series on Liadan’s recommendation and I loved it. The first two books were by far the best but overall it was a great trilogy.

Any other suggestions Liadan? I have just finished Anne Bishops - Tir Alainn Trilogy and really enjoyed it, but now I need to find something new.

:D w00t, someone else liked it!

I'd also suggest Sara Douglass and Juliet Marillier's other books. :) And Robin Hobb. :D Hope you like 'em!

    Thanks Liadan

I've read all of Robin Hobbs stuff and I haven’t found a series besides ASoIaF that I have liked as much as the farseer series, I loved Fitz. I dont like the The Soldier Son Trilogy much so far but I'll get the next one and see how it goes.

I’ve got the Axis trilogy at home and will start it next I think. I will have to check Juliet Marillier's web site and see what other books she has.

You won't regret the series, I promise you. :) They're also the only books I'm very careful to keep in pristine condition, lol. (Well, I DID try with ASoIaF, but you know there's something wrong when A Storm of Swords is in two pieces...)

Well im taking this recommend from two Hobbs fans:D it has to be worth my while.

I just finished Soldiers Son 1 an 2, on reflection it wasnt a bad read. I do feel its our disappointment at missing Fitz. She never should have ended his saga.*sigh*
