Anyone have any good ideas for metal scales to use in making costume scale mail? It seems like it would be awfully expensive to have them custom machined, yet common scale-like objects just don't seem to do it (thinking of spoon bowls, dog tags, etc.)

What are you making in scale? I would not even attempt to make scales but I have seen it done and wasn't impressed! Go to www.ringlord.com they sell scales in steel and brass and there not very expensive!!!

I've always liked scale, coat-of-plates, brigandine, etc. I just haven't been able to find a decent and affordable source of scales/plates. I'm just thinking of a basic hauberk-style leather coat with scales or plates attached.

Personally I thought that some of the scale armor in RotK was the most beautiful I've ever seen, but I don't quite aspire to those standards of quality.

I can defeintly agree that the LOTR armor is some of the most beautiful probably EVER crafted. Look in the apendecies of the DVD (Two towers) and they have close up picturse, and talk a lot about King Theodens armor. WOW. The went above and beyond with that armor.. And Aragorns's armor in ROTK is amazing.

    javelin98,
Here are a few sites that might help:
    http://www.io.com/~beckerdo/other/ScaleArmor/ScaleArmor.html
    http://www.larp.com/legioxx/squamata.html
http://www.theinnerbailey.com/scalearmor1.htm Nice picture of leather scale.
    http://www.theinnerbailey.com/scalebrcr1.htm Matching leather bracers.

The main advantage of scale armor is its flexibility. You can bend over and move almost naturally while still being fully protected. As the articles above reinforce, it's a great choice for armor!

    Deepeeka.com has a good-looking scale corselet. Can't link to a picture, sorry.

do you absolutely want metal scales?

because while using leather ones that where hardened in beeswax, you can get a pretty good result!

Heheh, Douglas, Christoph already posted the link to Matt's Squamata page...

Anyway, The Ring Lord has about the best selection of scales, but it's time consuming to construct, so if you're willing to pay not so much for scales, and then spend lots of time putting them together, showing results to us when you are done would be a must! :D

It shouldn't be too hard to make your own scales. Using brass sheet of a suitable thickness, you should be able to cut it with a good pair of tin snips.
