Agreed. Where's the love people, where's the love? I blame Hollywood for not spitting out enough Medieval films. I had to get my magic fix from Harry Potter last week and now I'm jonesing for more.

Well, personally, I'm just not that interested in actual Medieval times.

Hmm... I guess people prefer high fantasy and S&S instead of historical fantasy. I'm one of them.

That's a shame, because the real European Middle Ages were much richer and more compelling than even the best fantasy.

What is written as fantasy, for the most part, is pseudo medieval. It is placed in a utopian - or sometimes dystopian - world that has little to do with the real Middle Ages and written by writers who know little or nothing about the Middle Ages.

If you're interested in something a little more authentically medieval, try The Lions of Al-Rassan or The Last Light of the Sun by Guy Gavriel Kay. They have very little fantasy element, but are excellent stories based on actual events and historical figures.

For an even more medieval feel, try any of the Brother Cadfael mysteries by Ellis Peters, or Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet.

George RR Martin does a good job with late medieval politics, but the Westeros of his A Song of Ice and Fire is deliberately dystopian.

Yeah, George RR Martin was very medieval, at least from my experience.

Of course he had some fantasy, such as dragons, but it was just the right amount of fantasy to keep it interesting.
