First you got to know that the facts on the armies of the ancient world change constantly, as new evidence is found.

The Gladius names like Mainz and Pompeii are not really indications of periods, but are a reference to the location that particular gladius was excavated for the first time.

And yes the Romans definitely had Gladius type swords (much pointer then forinstence the Greek sword of that age) during the Carthaginian wars, the gladius as we know it started to show up in during the second Punic war

yup, I know about the names (mainz. fulham etc.) were extracted from the place they are are found at. what I meant was: apart from the name, there are notable differences between the different gladii. are these differences due to the different periods the swords were used or were they just multiple variations on the same theme.

Although some might argue with me on this, I would like to believe that there were multiple variations in the same time period.
I mean if you go true history there never was a identical sword that can be found all over Europe.
My guess is it all depended on the local weapons makers.

*I think I'm gonna start a new tread "Ask the Historian" lol*

Yes, that would be my guess also, although it appears to be debatable indeed. I asked my prof. this morning and he swears it to be the opposite: that the differences between the gladii are due to evolvement over the ages. I think that's possible but not likely. My guess is the same as yours, that the different models of gladii are different variations on the same theme.

sorry I meant in the movie not real hystory, but still roman swords were a pretty good design for their style fighting, on horse back and on foot...

    http://www.larp.com/legioxx/index.html

Legion XX, The number one site online for information on Roman arms and armor... And I suggest all of their links for equipment purchasing to be taken wisely;)

I love Roman stuff, even if I do love Greek stuff even more:D I own the Deepeeka Pompeii Gladius, Mainz Gladius, Greek Xiphos, Horsehead Falcata, 'Late' Late Gladius (4th cetunry AD, not really a Gladius, but a regular Roman sword of the period) and their 3rd Century Spatha... And soon I'm planning on purchasing their Early Spatha as well...

As for when the Lorica Segmentata came about, I see there's some confusion around here... The Segmentata started production sometime within the first quarter century after the Reforms in the Legions, under Marius. This would be about 25 AD or so, approximately...

As for my favorite style of Roman armor, I like the Lorica Hamata, or chainmail shirt. Plannin' on gettin' one next year, but I just spent some money on a regular chainmail shirt, so I don't have the cash for it currently...:\

Anyway, I hope to post around here more! Looks like a neat place:)
