what most people in nottingham think, myself included, is that Robin hood wasn't at all like he was in the movies or books, he was a criminal who was eventually tracked down and hung.

For a good bilbiography of books about Robin Hood check out http://www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/rh/rhlitbib.htm which is part of the Robin Hood Project http://www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/rh/rhhome.stm

This is under the umbrella of the Camelot project which is one of the premier sites on the Net devoted to the Authurian legends. There are also bibliographies of films about or with Robin Hood in them and lists of books about studying the Robin Hood legends.

As for films I'm surprised no one has mentioned the classic Errol Flynn, The Adventures of Robin Hood. But my personal favorite is Robin and Marian with Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn and Robert Shaw. It has probably the most realistic and brutal sword duel ever filmed. Andit even has a LOTR tie-in since Ian Holm plays the bad King John. :)
