Well, browsing through TheOneRing.net, they had a link to Games Workshops latest range of miniatures, and in the last picture it's got a Gondorian warrior wearing one of those ridiculous looking winged helmets.

There was much speculation as to who and what they were, someone suggested the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth but I'm no book guru (just a movie obsessive ;-) One the site they're listed as "Guards of the Fountain Court."

Ridiculous. I can't wait to hear the reasoning behind it. And the laughter.

There were "Swan knights" in gondolin. In fact Tuor's sign was a swan, and he was one of the fathers of Numenor. Maybe it is driven from that? I don't remember whether or not the LOTR book said anything about Swan helmets.

I think the book must have said something about the swan helmets. Otherwise, who in their right mind would have put them in there? I think they look ridiculous. I guess it's just tradition that they have those swan thingys on their helmets, but would they become quite bothersome if they was a fight or something?

But I did get a laugh out of it. There's this caption on ninecompanions.net with that picture that is hilarious. :D

I'll have to look it up. I guess they got a bit carried away with the costumes.

    Nice painting :)

But then I think of that ridiculous helmet and can't stop laughing :D I didn't know GW had them in miniatures already...I'll have to stop by a shop one day and have a look...even though it's kinda weird for girls to go into that shop...they all look at me oddly. :(

Nope, I'd never seen that picture before, I haven't seen any John Howe or Alan Lee books etc, but the winged helmet in that pic you attached has the wings more swept back, like the backstroke of wings in flight. That I can live with. But these ones are like big feathered air-brakes. Don't stand front on in a strong wind!!!

Yeah, it looks like the darn thing is going to start flapping those wings any minute. :D

I think the picture of the Gaurd with the "air-brake" wings might be part of a Ceremonial/Royal Gaurd unit at the wedding of Aragorn and Arwen (maybe? perhaps?)

The Helmet in the paint looks more like the Numenorien helm from the last alliance, which would be fitting since both Gondor and Arnor were founded from people who fled from Numenor (which, in turn, was founded in part by those who fled Gondolin... ;) )

I'm hoping it's just ceremonial. Otherwise, he's roasted chicken out on the Pelennor.

Hehehe, I can see the headlines in the Gondor Gazette - "Wing-nut clipped by friendly fire. Official investigation suspended due to lack of care factor. Rumours of quiet celebration among common soldiers." ;-p

I just posted a pic in the "Middle Earth Weapons" section of the Gallery. I hope the link below works:
    http://www.thefantasyforum.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=81&password=&sort=1&cat=538&page=1

I just had a thought. Maybe the wings on the helm are like a jet fighter's wings, like the F14 in Top Gun. The faster you go, the more swept back the wings go! So if you're charging on horseback, they fold back for aerodynamics! And if you're standing still like in the pic, they fan out for low-speed stability!

Either that or it's like a cat fluffing up its tail - you try and make yourself look bigger to scare your enemy! :D

'k. That's enough alreddy. As you saw in the GW pic? ..It says they are guards of the fountain courts right? So clearly they do not participate in battle in that gear!? That get-up is merely for decoration as a means of distinguishing these guards from others of lesser importance.. And even if they were to fight? They would be fighting within the confines of Minas Tirith, in the absence of high-velocity winds to disable their more-than-apt skills in battle. Basically, they could easily switch helms or detach those wings!? What's the whole deal you're trying to pull here..? The wings add character? And plus.. There are a vast selection of Gondorian helms with which to choose from. Their stock is not limited to winged helms that are infashionable to their means for battle..Give the Gondorian arms some credit darn it! :\

We're giving them plenty of credit. I mean, you have to admit that they look hilarious. They probably are just for decoration, tradition, whatever. But it's fun to poke jokes at them. LOTR humor is the best!

By the way, Mubabban, the headline for the "Gondor Gazette" was hilarious. I can't stop chuckling. :D
