So basically, I'm a complete amateur when it comes to anime/manga (or mango, as my fingers keep trying to type...) and I really have an urge to watch/read some as I'm starting to feel completely out of the loop. Any that you would particularly recommend I start with?

(Note: Already seen Death Note, Samurai Champloo, Yami No Matsuei and Loveless. Seen one episode of Bleach, but am kinda put off by the fact that there are so many to get through. Is it worth the haul?)

Bleach is excellent, I only half pay attention to the American tv broadcasts and I still greatly enjoy the series. I also recommend Paranoia Agent, it's really short and really dark, but it's worth checking out. FLCL is also a good one if you haven't already checked that out.

I suggest Naruto, even though it has many fillers it's still great, has humor, action and a good plot line and most importantly is has NINJAS!! lol

Tsubasa: Resivoir Chronicile: Its by Clamp, who is pretty durn famous, and has done many great anime and manga over the years. Look for anything else by Clamp, and you'll be good.

Witch Hunter Robin: oooo, i love this series. It's about witch hunting, obiously, and its really good, and it is one of my favorites of all time.

Full Metal Alchemist- Another Awesome one. Its about Edward and Alfonse Elric, brothers, and they try to complete something that they lost. It is a really great series, and its really worth watching.

.Hack- a good, fun series. Its about a game called the World.

Samurai 7- Its a good series, that i found out about on the Full Metal Alchemist Previews. Lots of action, and all that stuff.

Trigun- Its pretty short, but it is also AWESOME. Vash the Stampede is the first localized disaster, and find out about his life and times.

Shijō Saikyō no Deshi Kenichi- Great fighting series. It has lots of action, but also has comedy, so its defenitly worth checking out.

One Piece- Not the best series, but seeing as you like some Shonen Jump, you might as well check it out. Its moderately good. Its mostly good fun, with lots of wacky stuff but some people love it. Also maybe even Hikaru No Go. Try suscribing to Shonen Jump Magazine. I get it, and it has monthly updates, and has manga right in it.

and of course: Naruto. You either love it or you hate it, so at least watch a little. It gets off on a slow start, but eventually it gets alot better. Lots of action and comedy. Its really hairlarious, and its just really awesome. *fangirl dance* But then again, some people hate it, so it depends on your taste.

you'll probally like Bleach, its a really good series, with lots of cool characters and action.

And with movies, watch ANY Miyazaki Film(yeah i know i spelled it wrong, i'm tired :D)
    Jin-Roh, wolf brigade
    Akira
    Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
Ghost in the Shell (try reading the manga first.)

    That's okay, I forgive you :p

I went into town today because I was immensely bored and I came across a comic store called Travelling Man that I'd never noticed before, and was very pleased with myself until I found that they didn't have the issues of Death Note I wanted, or volume 1 of Bleach, and unfortunately I couldn't remember any other suggestions. Although they did seem to have a lot of volumes for Fruit Basket but I had no idea what that was about so I left it. What's it about?

What about Berserk or maybe a little bit of Cowboy Bebop? Both are a good series to watch but I have been told that the manga for Berserk is much better than the anime.

Fruits basket is fabulous. It's still, and always will be, one of my favorites. It's your typical drama/romance/humor type anime, but the characters are so loveable.
It's not all fun and games and has it's fair share of very serious and teary moments. Well worth looking into.
The manga continues on much further than the anime as far as the story goes and tying up loose ends.

    My recommendations (off the top of my head);
    Basilisk
    Bleach
    Blood+
    Elpen Lied
    Evangelion
    Fate/Stay night
    Get Backers
    Gungrave
    Haibane Renmei
    Loveless
    Mai Hime
    Noein
    Peacemaker
    Rumbling Hearts
    Saikano
    Samurai deeper Kyo
    Shakugan no Shana
    The melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya
    Trinity Blood
    Wolf's rain
    X

Yes, it seems that I made a typing mistake. I must be really stupid to need a kid on a public forum to point out the obvious for me.
    Woe is me.

    Feel better?

    No problem at all.

I know it's not much help when you get a list that long on things to watch! However if you feel you'd like to, send me a PM and let me know what kind of anime you're into. I have a rather vast collection and I'd be happy to point you in the right direction (as far as my tastes go, of course ;) )

Oh yeah, both are great choices. As for the manga vs. anime situation for Berserk, depends on the strength of your stomach. The anime should come with a PG14 warning for violence, sex, rape and nudity, but the manga is PG18 for violence, sex, nudity, rape, mental instability, demons, blood and gore, lots of gore. I love it!

Ok just so I don't seem like a complete deviant check out Samurai 7 - for Samurai, Bleach - I can't stress how good it is. Wolf's Rain - Very nice AU. Gunslinger Girls - Mafia and hit-girls what more do you need? Ninja Scrolls - too much gore, even for me. Kenshin - the gold of all anime. Full Metal Panic and TSR - mechs, emotionally stinted boys and hardcore girls, nuff said.

I recently finished RahXephon and found that quite enjoyable.
It's definately not Evangelion, but it's still good.

I tried to watch Grappler Baki but couldn't force myself through to the end of the first episode even.
