I'm not (I hope) preaching Martin, just defending him. :) (I would, however, do it because I think Martin is a great author and would want as many as possible to experience the same feelings I have). Naturally, when someone attacks an author his fans will try to come to his rescue.

I see your points though, ASoIaF isn't everyone's cup of tea.

It wasn't my intention to attack him and I'm sorry if you felt that I did. I was just trying to answer Appaliq's question.

Thanks, Blackwing. I guess that just goes to show that everyone takes things in differently and processes them based on their own set of standards.

For me, I think a lot would have been lost without the sheer reality (or yes - even brutality) of the characters' actions. I guess I get defensive because the people I've met who have read the books (or I guess one of the books in your case) and NOT liked them have been few and far between. I don't want you to pit others against the series just because it isn't all a perfect fairy tale ending.

Anyway, I told myself I wasn't going to do this again so in the spirit of the thread, I'd like to recommend Jacqueline Carey's series "Kushiel's Legacy".

Have to TOTALLY agree on these. Except I found Scutator and Chimaera to be very droll reads. The View From The Mirror Quartet was one of the best series I've read. A little slow to get into, but theres a snowball effect. ;)

I have to recommend A Song Of Ice And Fire as well, since I'm Appaliq's little convert. ;) I'm only halfway through the second book and I'm hooked.

Another Aussie author (He doesn't write so much fantasy, but sci-fi) is Matthew Reilly. I recommend these books to anyone who asks me for a good read. Non-stop action, I promise you.

    - Contest
    - Hover Car Racer
    - Temple
    - Ice Station
    - Area 7
    - Scarecrow

Get out there and get into 'em. :D

Not 'attack' in any negative way, but negative remarks, no matter how small, will almost always gain attention. Anything to make "unbelievers" try again. ;)
