Specifically, this confused me: Frodo seemed suprised and upset to learn that Boromir was dead, but later Sam gives Faramir a big run down of the events before Boromir's death (Boromir trying to take the Ring, etc.) but I don't think Sam was around when Boromir died...

How come Sam knew what was up but Frodo didn't?

Sam didn't know the exact way Boromir died but he knew Boromir was trying to take the ring from Frodo. He was with them when they realized Boromir had gone off after Frodo and put two and two together.

I imagine Frodo and Sam discussed it, "comparing notes" while Faramir was reflecting and thinking about his late brother.

More likely they discussed it while they were trekking through the wilderness.

I think Sam got the story from Frodo, then in Osgiliath everything seemed about to fail, so he played a Trump Card, and hit Faramir where it hearts by relating Boromir's death to the Ring. I'm not saying he made it up but he probably assumed a few things...

In the book Faramir knows about Boromir's death and he doesn't take the hobbits to Osgiliath. He knows that the ring would currupt him, so he resists the ring as much as he can!

as far as i understand it faramir said "it will greive you to learn that boromir is dead then?" write then sam says later "boromir died trying to talk the ring from frodo" so sam or frodo never tell faramir about his death

Exactly. Faramir informs the hobbits that Boromir is dead and the hobbits must have pieced it all together before the trip to Osgiliath.
Frodo knew about a company of Uruks attacking the Fellowship. He also knew about Boromir's state of mind at their last meeting.
